The jackfruit is a delicious fruit found throughout certain parts of Asia.
But there is more to the fruit than just its taste. When considering the fruit’s
English name, it is easy to become overwhelmed with questions like: “Who
is Jack And why does he have his own fruit ”
Surprisingly, “jackfruit” isn’t a person’s name at all. The fruit’s name
originally comes from the southern Indian word “chakka pazham”, with
India thought to be the fruit’s place of origin. Portuguese explorers who
journeyed to this region went on to call it “jaca”, which leads us to the current English name of jackfruit,
according to NPR. Unfortunately, no one called Jack has been proven(证明) to be involved in this process.

There is another food, however, that was directly named after a person-the sandwich. In the 18th century,
playing card games late into the night became fashionable in British high society. John Montagu, the 4th Earl
of Sandwich, started the habit of ordering pieces of cold beef between two pieces of bread in order to get a late-
night snack without having to leave the gaming table or use a knife and fork.
This unique snack kept bands clean so card players could continue on without dirtying their cards. The
midnight snack quickly became popular with everyday people, and before long everyone was making their own
sandwiches. That is how the sandwich was invented and got its name.
Away from the world of food, there are more examples of names inspired by people. Long johns, the warm
trousers that keep us warm in winter, are said to have been named after the US boxer John I. Sullivan who took
to wearing a similar type of clothes in the match.
There are many other interesting etymologies in the English language like these. So the next time you find
an interesting name, why not explore its history too

①Litterati is the name of a company that’s trying to make the world a cleaner place and doing a fine job of
it. It has created an app that people can use to upload information about the litter they collect outside, such as
its appearance, material and location. Shared online, this information helps to build a global data (数据) base of
“litter maps”, which can influence government management and packaging(美化) design.
②Jeff Kirschner is the inventor of Litterati app. He came up with the idea while walking in a northern
California forest with his four-year-old daughter, who noticed a plastic kitty litter box in a river. Young as she
was, she expressed her worries about the box being somewhere that it wasn’t supposed to be. This knowledge
stays with Kirschner as adults -The litter problem is so huge: What’s a single person supposed to do
③That’s where Kirschner thinks an app can help. “Society’s failure to solve the litter problem has not been
from lacking (缺乏) government support. There have been public service announcements, neighborhood litter
walks and coastal cleanups. And these activities successfully raise public knowledge of pollution,” said
Kirschner. But he believes one thing is missing from the discussion-online datas and if these are added in, people
can start solving the problem in a better way.
④Uploading pictures to an app shows users that they’re not the only ones picking up litter from public
places. And the data has been gathered rapidly, telling a story that helps people understand who picked up what,
where and when. “In San Francisco, the Litterati app was able to discover and map more than 5,000 pieces of
rubbish in order to find out how much was produced by cigarettes exactly. Using this information, the city
successfully doubled an existing cigarette sales tax (香烟销售税). In the Netherlands, Litterati’s data helped
push brand Anta Flu to repackage its hard candies in paper, rather than non-recyclable plastic,” said Kirschner.
{#{QQABDYwUggCIABIAAQgCAwUoCgGQkBCACIoGQEAIoAAByRFABAA=}#}
⑤Litterati shows a positive we-can-do-it attitude. “Its goal isn’t to shame. It’s to provide a real way to solve
the litter problem and encourage people to be part of the project,” explained Kirschner.
38.The underlined word “upload” in Paragraph 1 probably means ________in Chinese.
A.搜寻 B.上传 C.储存 D.处理
39.What does Kirschner think has caused failure to solve the litter problem
A.Lack of online datas about litter. B.The public’s refusal of community action.
C.Absence of government support. D.People’s poor environmental knowledge.
40.What can people do with Litterati app
A.They can know where to drop litter. B.They can invite more people to join them.
C.They can find an area littered with rubbish. D.They can help people sort litter for recycling.
41.Why did Kirschner give the examples in Paragraph 4
A.To encourage a wider use of the app. B.To introduce the function of the app.
C.To voice his views on managing the app D.To show the practical advantage of the app.
D
A heat wave roasted(烤)hundreds of thousands of people across the Pacific Northwest, taking away
hundreds of lives. Climate change has made heat waves like this one more frequent and stronger than those from
any other point in recorded history.
The following is what happens if you’re one of the next people whom heat wave kills, according to W.
Lawrence Kenney, an expert from Penn State University. First, your brain sends
messages to encourage sweat( )) production. Then your heart starts beating
faster to pump (泵送) blood to the skin, and at the same time, blood flow is also
directed away from your organs like liver, kidneys, and gut. That’s your body
trying to make your skin hotter than the air outside and move heat away from
you.
If heat stroke(中暑)happens, your body might get too hot and send much blood to the skin, as a result, it
fails those important organs in your body. You might require an emergency transplant to survive the organ failure.
If your body fails to cool you down, its internal(体内的) temperature might start to climb from a normal level
of about 98 degrees Fahrenheit to somewhere closer to 104 degrees. At that temperature, the brain becomes
affected and you may feel it start as a headache. Before long, you might not know where you are or what time
it is. If you are not treated in time, what follows is a series of organ failure that leads to all but certain death.
And that’s just part of what we know about how heat wave kills you.
“It’s important for people to understand that there’s still a lot we don’t know about heat stroke and who’s
most likely to be harmed,” Kenney said, “That’s because we can’t study it in humans in the laboratory. A lot of
what we know comes from studies on animal models, like mice and rats, or from examinations of people who
have died of heat stroke.”
42.Which of the following will happen if a heat wave attacks a person
A.The skin will produce less sweat. B.The heart beats will slow down.
C.There will be more blood in the skin. D.The organs will be more active.
43.What can we do first if heat stroke happens
A.Prevent organs from failing. B.Try to cool down the body.
C.Try to treat the headache. D.Stop sweat from producing.
44.What can we learn from Kenny in the last paragraph
A.There hasn’t been enough study so far. B.We should keep studying human deaths.
{#{QQABDYwUggCIABIAAQgCAwUoCgGQkBCACIoGQEAIoAAByRFABAA=}#}
C.We have already studied on humans. D.The studies on animal models are useless.
45.Which of the following can be the best title
C. How heat strokes are developed B.How we can keep organs work well
C.How we can slow down global warming D. How heat waves destroy the human body

are asked to join in. It will be a race of 10,000 meters. Whether it rains or not, it will start at 2
o’clock. Those who want to take part in it should enter the names before Tuesday afternoon at
the school office, and meet on the playground at 1:30 p.m. Don’t be late. All the runners need to
circle the playground twice before running out of our school. Then a police car will lead the way
along Renmin Street, so you can just run after the car. Finally, the runners should run back
through the school gate to the playground and circle the playground once more. That’s all. Thank
you!

参考范文:
The words that raised me up
Warm words always have magic power to make us confident and full of hope. I like “Hard work is half of
success.” very much.
I still remember the first time I learned how to swim. At first the coach taught me some basic swimming
skills. Though I practiced hard, I still couldn’t make any progress. I felt sad and doubted that I was born
without the ability to swim. The coach seemed to know something from the sadness on my face. He comforted
me and said,“Hard work is half of success. I believe you will make it.” Suddenly I felt full of energy again.
These words gave me the courage to keep on swimming. Finally, I learned to swim and did the best!
Thanks to these words, I challenged myself and became a better man.
