Julie Willis is an artist from San Francisco who moved to London ten years ago. We asked her to compare life in San Francisco and London. Here’s what she told us. (1) The cities
San Francisco is a lovely city in a beautiful bay in the USA.It’s got lots of great buildings and places. It’s smaller and much more modern than London, but it’s less interesting. London has a lot more theatres and museums. The Americans are usually more interested in money than culture! The buildings and streets in London are very great, and the parks and markets are wonderful. London is not as dangerous as San Francisco. I feel much safer living here—nobody carries a gun. The police don’t carry guns either.
(2) The living
People have a higher standard (水平) of living in San Francisco because it’s much less expensive than England. For example, petrol is less than half the price and the things like food, clothes and cameras are much cheaper. It’s a shopper’s paradise and I always spend a lot of money buying things before I go back to London! It’s a bit more expensive to rent a house in London and my bills are much bigger than they were in San Francisco. So, although my salary in London is about the same as it was in the United States, I have to work harder to get the same quality of life as I had before.
(3)________
In San Francisco you can walk everywhere because it’s a small city. There’s less traffic than in London, and the public transport is great. There are cable cars to go up all the hills and electric buses which make the city much cleaner. Public transport in London is terrible and really expensive. It takes me an hour to get to work and the journey is usually stressful (紧张的). London’s dirtier too and much more polluted. The traffic is bad, because there is too many cars and the streets are narrow. But English drivers aren’t as bad as American drivers.
(4) Food
Food in the United States is much better. It’s fresher, cheaper, and there’s much more choice. Restaurants aren’t as expensive as in London and the service is much better. In some restaurants they put a clock on the table when you arrive, and if they haven’t served your meal in five minutes, they’ll give you the food free!
39.Living in London isn’t as dangerous as in San Francisco because ________.
A.there are less people in London
B.the police carry guns
C.nobody carries a gun besides the police
D.the buildings and streets are very great
40.The writer always ________ before she goes back to London.

A.they put a clock on your table

Two important 53 took place in the Middle East at the beginning of the Bronze Age. One was the invention of the ox-drawn plow (犁). The other was the invention of the wheel and axle (车轴). Many scientists date the beginning of civilization, or advanced culture, to this time.
In the 1000s BC the Hittite people of Anatolia learned to work with iron, which is stronger than bronze. This began the Iron Age. 54 , people throughout the world made iron tools and weapons.
A period called the Middle Ages began in about AD 500 and lasted 55 about 1500. Many advances during this time came from other places-for example, China, Persia and India. By about the 1400s, Europeans learned the Chinese technique of casting iron. This involved 56 iron and pouring it into a mold to harden. Chinese inventors also developed black powder, the original form of gunpowder. New sources of powder were developed during this time.

Most of us spend our lives surrounded by screens, with which we manage our work, our recreation and our relationships. These devices offer us convenience as well as connection and a lot of information. H 57 , it’s also easy to feel pressured to keep up with every message. More and more people want to take a break from technology.
The phrase “digital detox” describes staying away from TV, phones, computers and other forms of technology that c 58 our lives for a period of time. These breaks can occur in a variety of ways. Some experts suggest completely avoiding u 59 screen time for 30 days. Others suggest using an app that will limit the amount of time one can spend on certain websites. A third option is logging out in evenings and/or on w 60 . Others simply turn their phones off. Some even pay high prices to take vacations in places where they can take time out from technology.
Why do you want to take a digital detox Perhaps you find that you are spending longer than you plan on certain apps or that they distract you from more important things. Perhaps social media is depressing because you compare yourself to others or you f 61 missing out on things that other people are enjoying.
Technology can also have p 62 effects. Many people experience back or neck pain and the blue light coming from most screens can also affect people’s sleep.

One of the greatest experiences I’ve ever had was in Morocco. It was a trip to the desert. We set off from Marrakesh at 7 a. m. in a minibus and headed southeast. The countryside on the way was very unusual, with dry gray cliffs (悬崖). Below them in the canyons were lots of green palm trees. When we got to the Atlas Mountains, we ran into a snowstorm, and it got very cold in the bus.
It’s incredible to think that the hot desert was so near.
After traveling for two days, we finally got to Merzuga, a tiny town on the edge of the Sahara Desert. We left our stuff in a hostel and drove to the place from which the caravans (宿营拖车) departed. Before sunset, we boarded our camels and rode into the desert over the dunes (沙丘). The dunes were amazing — they changed color depending on the angle of the sun. The ride lasted about two hours. When we reached the camp, it was dark and cold, and I was starving. We sat in the camp and waited for dinner. Several hours later, they brought a lamb dish, which five of us shared from a plate, eating with our hands.
After dinner, everyone went to sleep in tents, except me. I’ve always wanted to have the experience of sleeping in the desert, under the stars. But I didn’t realize it could get so cold at night. So I took the same blanket that I used to ride the camel and wrapped myself in it to keep warm. During the day, the temperatures can reach 50℃, but at night, they fall to 4℃. The dunes looked like snow, and the clear sky covered with stars was an amazing sight. No wonder the Moors (摩尔人) were such great astronomers. They had a planetarium above them to observe every night.
Suddenly, I saw a shooting star, and I made a wish: _________________________.
