The compass(指南针)is one of the Four Great inventions of Ancient China. Before the compass was invented, people depended on the position of the sun and stars to tell them the direction when at sea, which only worked when it wasn’t cloudy. As early as the Warring States Period. Chinese people discovered that a magnet could show the south and the north, and, on the basis of this feature, they made a southward-pointing instrument that was the model of the compass. The instrument was made up of a smooth magnetic spoon and a copper(铜)plate carved with directions;the handle of the spoon pointed south. In the Song dynasty, people combined an artificially(人造地)magnetized compass with an azimuth(方位)plate to create proper compass.
In the Northern Song dynasty, the compass was being used for sailing. In the Southern Song dynasty, its use spread to Arabia and Europe, and Arabs called it “the Eye of Sailors”. The invention of the compass had great influence on sailing, opening up a new chapter(篇章)in the history of the world sailing. Thus, Zheng He made seven ocean journeys across seas to Southeast Asia and around Indian Ocean in the early Ming dynasty, Christopher Columbus discovered the New World, and Ferdinand Magellan sailed round the world.

Although I was never a thin girl, I was always fit because I played basketball from the 5th grade right through college. But after graduation, I got married and gave up playing basketball. Then I started eating too much. In 10 years, my weight increased from 175 to 245 pounds. What was even worse, my son picked up a bad eating habit. As a four-year-old boy, he liked having French fries because he often saw me put those things into my mouth.
I read an article in my husband’s health magazine. It said that being too fat can shorten a person’s life by five to ten years. That was scary. I didn’t want to leave my son because of my poor eating habits. After that, every time I wanted to have French fries, I would think that I could be here a little bit longer if I just ate better.
One of my friends told me that an organization was offering a free course to help people lose weight, so I decided to join it. The teacher gave each type of food a certain number of calories (卡路里), and how many calories we needed to eat a day. After I came home from the first class, I calculated (计算) the calories of food in my meal. If I wanted, I could have pizza every night. But when I learned that one piece had a lot of calories, I decided not to eat as many pieces as I wanted.
Finally, I succeeded in losing 50 pounds. In February, 2012, I was on the cover of a health magazine. And my husband always told other people that I looked better than ever.

People often ask me for suggestions about how to learn English. As for it everyone is different. I’ll share some of my experience. I once took a school year English course in Wuhan University, but I mostly learned English on my own.
One thing I can tell you is that, once you’ve started learning, you should try to think in English as much as you can. If you see some things when you’re riding your bike or walking down the street, just think about “How would I say them in English ” At first, it might be with simple words or phrases, but later you should think about longer phrases and sentences. Now I’m in America, and for most of the time, I would think in English and speak it directly. It’s amazing how much this helps.
For several years after I started learning, I was often afraid of talking with others in English because I didn’t want to make mistakes. Finally I got it over. And while traveling in America, I’d try to hang out with friend who couldn’t speak Chinese, so that I’d have no choice but to speak English. And I also decided that if I said something stupid and other people laughed at me, then so be it. After that, my English started improving much more quickly.
Besides, it may be a good idea to ask your American friends to look at the way you’ re writing, and give you some suggestions for improvement.

Homestay is a form of study abroad programme. It allows the visitor to rent a room from a local family to better understand the local lifestyle. “Students who wish to learn more about foreign cultures or to get foreign experience should join this kind of holiday. I am sure you won’t be disappointed.” said a teacher during a school meeting last term.
After this special meeting, I always thought about this kind of holiday. Last month, I had a chance at last to go on such a holiday with some of my schoolmates and we went to London, a place where I had wanted to go since years ago. As we were still young, we had a group leader who planned things for us and looked after us. After we got to London, we went to stay with different families. I was lucky that my host family(寄宿家庭) was a white couple who had a daughter about my age. They treated me as a daughter of their family during my stay there. They were interested in me and I learnt a lot of things from them, too.

Then we would have classes or go on a sightseeing trip to different places of interest like the Big Ben, the London Bridge, and the Buckingham Palace. I had a very special teacher in high school many years ago. Her husband died of a heart attack. About a week after his death, she shared some of her insights with us.
The class was nearly over. She said, “Before class is over, I would like to share with all of you an important thought.”
“Each of us is put here on Earth to learn, share, love, appreciate and give of ourselves. We must make the most out of every single day.”
Her eyes began to water and she went on, “So I would like you all to make me a promise. From now on, on your way to school, or on your way home, find something beautiful to notice. It doesn’t have to be something you see—It could be a good smell or the sound of the gentle wind.”
“Please look for these things, and cherish them. They are what is in life. We must pay attention to noticing them, for at any time it can all be taken away.”
Every once in a while, I think of that teacher and try to appreciate all of those things that sometimes we don’t notice.

Every month, Julia and her cousins would go for the big family meal at their grandparents’ house. They would always wait excitedly for the moment their grandfather would give them a few coins. Then all the children would buy sweets. The grandparents, aunts, uncles, and parents realised that, behaving like this, the children would never learn to manage their money. So they proposed a special test: the children would have to show what they could manage to get with those few coins over the course of a year.
Some of the children thought that they would save their money, but Ruben and Nico, the two smallest kids, paid no attention, and they continued spending it all on sweets. Every time, they would show off their sweets in front of the other children, laughing and making fun of(取笑) their cousins. They made Clara and Joe so angry that these two could no longer stand keeping saving their money. They joined Ruben and Nico in spending whatever they had on sweets.
Monty was a clever boy, and he decided to start managing his money by exchanging it: buying and selling things, or betting(打赌) it with other children in card games. Soon he had surprised the whole family. He had saved a lot of money for little hard work. The way he was going, he would almost end up as a rich man. Although it wasn’t much money, on seeing Julia’s excitement, the violinist agreed, and he taught her happily for months. Julia showed so much interest that after a year, the violinist lent her a violin, so they could play together in the park. They were so successful that gradually she got her own violin.

I never took cooking classes. I learned cooking from my mother because she was really interested in teaching me how to cook. The main reason for this was that when she grew up, she didn’t know how to cook anything, even an egg. My grandmother never allowed (允许) her to stay in the kitchen when she was cooking.
My mother did not start to cook until she was 25 years old. In the beginning, it was very hard for her. So she had to take cooking classes. After having that experience, she decided to teach me how to cook because she didn’t want me to have the same experience as her.
When I was seven years old, my mother was cooking and I was with her in the kitchen enjoying cooking. As a young girl, I always helped her. Sometimes we cooked meals that my mother knew how to make, and sometimes we cooked them from recipes. Now, I am really thankful for the experience.
I will do the same with my children because I don’t want them to have the same experience as my mother. If one day I am not with them, I want to be sure that they can live a better life.
62.Who didn’t allow the writer’s mother to stay in the kitchen
63.How did the writer’s mother learn to cook
64.Why did the writer’s mother teach the writer how to cook
65.When did the writer start learning cooking from her mother
66.What will the writer do
Answer the questions:
A rich man was once riding along the road and saw an old man digging in his garden. On the ground lay a young tree, ready to be planted. The rich man called out to the old man, “What kind of tree are you planting there, my good man ”
“This is a fig tree, sir.” He said.
“A fig tree ” the rich man was very surprised. “Why, how old are you, may I ask ”
“I am ninety years old.”
“What!” cried the rich man. “You’re ninety years old. You are planting a very young tree now and it’ll take years to give fruit. You certainly don’t hope to live long enough to get any fruit from this tree.”
The old man looked around the garden. Then he said with a smile, “Tell me, sir. Did you eat figs when you were a boy ”
“Sure,” the man did not know why he asked this question.
“Then tell me this,” he said. “Who planted the fig trees ”

Once a boy wanted to fly. He made a pair of wings. He used some wax (蜡) to keep the feathers on the wooden frame. He flew and flew, and flew too close to the Sun. The Sun melted the wax, and the feathers were blown off by the wind. Down came the boy into the ocean.
This is just a story. But it tells us that man has always dreamed of flying. In 1783, this dream came true. Two French brothers invented the hot-air balloon. It rose a thousand feet high.
It took almost 100 years for man to move from the hot-air balloon to the first airship. The first airship was invented in the late 1800s. It was a powered (装有发动机的) balloon.
In North Carolina, less than twenty-five years later, the Wright Brothers flew the first airplane. This first flight, in 1903, lasted less than half a minute! It covered just a few feet.
