Spanish artist Almudena Romero is exhibiting her unique plant-based art that shows it’s possible to create art in an eco-friendly manner, with her inclusion in exhibitions in London and Paris.
In her four-chapter series called The Pigment Change, rather than developing photos on photographic paper, she prints them directly onto plants. “I just put a negative (底片) on top of the leaf and leave it to the sunlight, and then the image gets recorded on the leaf,” Romero said. “But I also print on living plants using a digital projector, and the plant makes photosynthesis (光合作用) with the light from the projector and records an image.”
But she admits that her eco-friendly techniques wouldn’t work for all artists. “It produces temporary pieces, so it’s a lot more difficult to be financially sustainable when your art is temporary, but I guess it’s also depending on how you understand life and what you want to do with your practice,” she explained.
For Romero, plants are beings we can learn from. For the Spaniard (西班牙人), we should challenge the idea that humans are the most important beings, stressing the value of all living organisms and ecosystems and seeing other species as having their own agendas and intentions. The artist explained that she sees plants respond and adapt to light changes throughout the seasons. “Why do we tend to think that we only have these abilities as humans ” said Romero. “The problem is the common perspective that we think that we are very different until science proves the opposite.”
She won the BMW Residency Award for the project. Now, Romero is working on her next project, which is due to be completed by June 2025. For Romero, this art-science project is like coming full circle. “I love my passion for plant photography,” she said, “I’m really happy about plant photography.”
4. How does Almudena Romero create her plant-based art
A. By printing plants on photographic paper.
B. By recording images on plants with light.
C. By projecting negatives onto living plants.
D. By attaching the photos to the top of leaves.
5. Which of the following best describe Romero’s art
A. Unique but short-lived. B. Creative and profitable.
C. Practical but time-consuming. D. Widespread and eco-friendly.
6. What can we learn about plants and humans according to Romero
A. Plants are less important than humans.
B. Humans are more adaptable than plants.
C. Plants have their own purposes and values.
D. Humans should allow plants to grow naturally.
7. Which can be a suitable title for this text
A. The Art-Science Project: The Future of Photography
B. The Art-Science Project: A Combination of Technology and Art

Tennis is a popular sport with growing impact on trends, from clothing to movies. Now, it’s even influencing furniture design. Belgium eco-designer Mathilde Wittock is creating furniture from discarded tennis balls. She chose to repurpose tennis balls due to their short lifespan. “It takes around 24 different manufacturing steps to produce a tennis ball, which is around five days. Then it has such a short lifespan,” Wittock told CNN. She aims to keep the 300 million tennis balls produced annually out of landfills.
Wittock graduated in 2021 from Central Saint Martins with degrees in product design and natural design. Her degree project, Soundbounce, was an acoustic (隔音的) material made from recycled tennis balls, inspired by her sensitivity to noise. “Being very sensitive to noise, the tennis ball presented an opportunity to address this issue,” she said. “And, with noise pollution an ever-increasing problem, its effects are still largely unknown, but it is evident that it negatively impacts physical and mental health so creating solutions for this is key.”
Creating furniture from tennis balls is challenging. Wittock cuts each ball by hand along the white line, removes the brand logo, and creates frames with holes where the taken-apart balls fit. The result is a padded (衬垫) surface excellent for sound reduction. It takes her three to four weeks to complete a chaise, which she sells for $2,900. Each ball is dyed by hand to match the client’s space.
The tennis balls Wittock uses are donated from tennis clubs. She now works with the Federation of Wallonia in Brussels, who offered her their entire stock of 100,000 balls. This will last for a while as Wittock can only use around 1,800 a week.
The life of these tennis balls doesn’t end as furniture. When the soft covering wears away or the rubber breaks down, the furniture pieces can be taken apart and recycled into other useful objects like playground mats. Being able to keep reusing materials is key to eco-design. Wittock’s work demonstrates how discarded items can be transformed into functional, sustainable products.
8. What was Soundbounce inspired by
A. Wittock’s love for tennis. B. Wittock’s design degrees.
C. Wittock’s sensitivity to noise. D. Wittock’s wish to recycle balls.
9. How does Wittock make the furniture sound-reducing
A. By using special machines. B. By creating padded surfaces.
C. By adding extra coverings. D. By choosing thick materials.
10. Why does the author mention the Federation of Wallonia
A. To show Wittock’s social skills. B. To show the large demand for balls.
C. To show the support for Wittock’s work. D. To show the popularity of Wittock’s furniture.
11. What does the author think of Wittock’s work
A. It’s innovative. B. It’s wasteful. C. It’s ordinary. D. It’s expensive.

Construction workers recently found the ruins of a large pyramid beside a highway in Mexico. After discovering the site, researchers collected many ancient objects that will be studied in their laboratories over the coming months. The structure was found in June 2024 during highway expansion work in Hidalgo, central Mexico. The discovery happened by chance as workers were adding a third lane to the federal highway, showing how ancient structures can still be found during modern construction projects.
Scientists from Mexico’s National Institute of Anthropology and History went to study the site. They used drones to take pictures and collected 155 items, including pieces of pottery, stone tools, and shells. To protect the old building, they built a large wall around the pyramid, which is 43 meters long and 11.7 meters high.
The pyramid is part of an old settlement called San Miguel, built between 650-1519 CE. The area was ruled by the “Metzca lordship,” which influenced the region until the 1500s. People have lived in this region for a very long time, with the oldest settlements dating back at least 14,000 years. This shows that many different groups of people have lived here over thousands of years.
Scientists keep finding hidden ancient buildings in Mexico and other parts of the Americas. Many discoveries are made using LiDAR, a technology that uses laser light to see things concealed under plants and trees. This tool helps archaeologists (考古学家) find old structures that they couldn’t see just by looking at the ground.
Last year, researchers used LiDAR to find an 18-kilometer road that connected ancient Maya cities over 1,200 years ago. In Guatemala, they also discovered a previously unknown Maya civilization with 964 settlements connected by 177 kilometers of ancient roads. These findings show that the Americas had complex and thriving societies long before European settlers arrived. The discoveries remind us how advanced these ancient civilizations were, though their development was later interrupted by colonization. Each new discovery helps build a more complete picture of these remarkable ancient societies.
12. What action did scientists take first after discovering the site
A. They restored the pyramid. B. They contacted local authorities.
C. They removed all artifacts. D. They photographed the site.
13. What does the underlined word “concealed” in paragraph 4 probably mean
A. Ancient. B. Hidden. C. Risky. D. Connected.
14. What does the author convey in the last paragraph
A Maya civilization was primitive. B. European settlers improved local life.
C. Ancient Americas had advanced societies. D. Modern technology surpasses ancient wisdom.
15. What’s the best title for the text
A. Mexico builds new highways. B. Ancient ruins need protection.
C. Unexpected discovery reveals past civilization. D. Modern technology helps archaeological work.

When I was seven years old, my family moved from Mexico to America. In Mexico, I was a cheerful girl who loved making people laugh with my jokes and inventing fun games to play with my friends. However, when I arrived in America, I found it hard to fit in, and I became quieter.
We lived in a small house with a modest yard where we grew vegetables—my responsibility. While I took pride in watching them grow, there were times when I dreamed of having a beautiful garden like my schoolmate Luella’s, with its delicate tulips (郁金香). Although Luella lived in the same neighborhood as me, we barely knew each other.
It was after a tornado that Luella and I finally became close friends.
The tornado struck on a Sunday afternoon. The gentle breeze transformed into a strong wind and thick gray clouds filled the sky. Gradually, the tornado took shape, starting as a thin rope and growing into a large black funnel (漏斗). My entire family gathered in the bathroom, seeking shelter from the storm. Terrified, I sat close to my mom, knees in my chest. After the storm had passed, our worries and fears were replaced by relief that we were unharmed and that our house had remained undamaged.
As I stepped outside, I witnessed the extent of the damage the tornado had caused to our neighborhood. Across the street, a tall tree had fallen, crushing Luella’s garden in front of her yellow house. We hurried over to check on it. Fortunately, her family seemed to be away at the time, and no one was injured. However, her once-beautiful garden was in ruins, with the fallen tree destroying the tulips and debris (碎片) spread everywhere. I could only imagine how heartbroken they must feel seeing this.
Then my mom’s usual words rang in my ear, “It is more blessed to give than to receive,” and my family started to think about how we could help.

Dear Chairman,
I am writing to express my support for designating the Double Ninth Festival as a national holiday in the Model CPPCC.
As a high school student, I believe this proposal carries substantial cultural and social significance. The Double Ninth Festival, rooted in Chinese tradition, symbolizes respect for the elderly and the beauty of autumn. By making it a national holiday, we can preserve our cultural heritage and instill a sense of pride in younger generations. Moreover, recognizing the Double Ninth Festival as a national holiday reinforces family values and devotion towards parents. It provides an occasion for families to reunite, fostering stronger bonds and social harmony.
In conclusion, I endorse this proposal as it celebrates our cultural identity and promotes values vital to our society. Thank you for considering my viewpoint.
Sincerely,
Li Hua
Just at that moment, Luella’s family returned in their car. Empathy surged within me as I saw the shock and disbelief on their faces. I couldn’t help but approach Luella, tightly holding her hands and saying, “I’m so sorry for your loss, but thankfully you’re all right.” She weakly nodded at me, still appearing puzzled by the devastating sight. My family volunteered to help hers clean up the mess, cutting down the branches and removing the fallen trees from the yard. To uplift Luella’s spirits and bring her comfort, I tried my best to cheer her up while tidying the garden with her, during which my own joyful personality seemed to revive a bit.
Even after the debris was cleared, I could still sense Luella’s sorrow for her lost garden. My heart went out to her, knowing how much she had cherished those tulips that she had devoted so much energy to. Yet now, they were all gone. Determined to restore the beauty that once thrived, I suggested that we rebuild the garden. Luella agreed delightedly. With each bulb carefully planted and watered, the new tulip seedlings once again filled the garden, which symbolized the sprouting of a new friendship between us, as well as the turning that I finally got embraced by this new environment. My mom was right: it’s more blessed to give than to receive because when you give. You may receive something unexpected in return.
