M: Hello. International Friends Club. Can I help you
W: Hello. I read about your club in the paper today and I thought I’d phone to find out a big
more.
M: Yes. Certainly. Well. We’re a sort of social club for people from different countries. It’s
quite a new club. We have about 50 members at the moment, but we’re growing all the time.
W: That sounds interesting. I’m British actually, and I came to Washington about three months
ago. I’m looking for ways to meet people. What kinds of events do you organize
M: Well, we have social get-together and sports events and we also have language evenings.
W: Could you tell me something about the language evenings
M: Yes. Every day except Thursday we have a language evening. People can come and
practice their languages. You know, over a cocoa or something. We have different languages on
different evenings. Monday, Spanish; Tuesday, Italian; Wednesday, German; and Friday, French.
On Thursday we usually have a meal in a restaurant for anyone who wants to come.
W: Well, that sounds great. I really need to practice my French.
M: OK. Well, if you can just give me your name and address, I’ll send you the form and some
more information. If you join now, you can have the first month free.

M: Well, I started learning Chinese a long time ago. 6First I learned a little bit when I was in
college. But I probably picked up most of it when I was overseas in Beijing.
W: Did you meet any difficulties in your learning
M: Yes, a lot. Grammar and vocabulary are not easy for foreigners like me. 7 But two of the most
challenging things when you study Chinese are the tones and the characters. Writing
Chinese characters is like drawing pictures. As a Chinese character with square structure, its
“form”, “sound” and “meaning” form a close combination, but the relationship between the three
is relatively complex. I think that’s just extremely difficult. And it was frustrating to be
teaching...teaching kindergarten students and realizing that their reading was much better than
mine.
W: Of course they were. They have been exposed to Chinese for so many years.

W: 11Usually the last Saturday of the month at 7:30 in the evening. Is that too late for you
M: No, I think that’s okay. What do you talk about in the group
W: Well, every month we choose a new book. 12And then during the next meeting, we discuss it.
M: What books have you read
W: Quite a lot. Recently we have read The Beautiful Mind, Paper Towns and The Great Gatsby.
Now we are reading The Kite Runner.
M: The Kite Runner I’ve heard that’s a good book. What is it about
W: It’s a story about a boy who grows up in Afghanistan during the 1980s and struggles to find his
place in the world because of the results of a series of extremely unpleasant childhood events.
M: That sounds interesting. I’d love to come.

(Text 10)
W: I have a question for all of us. Is all winning success Winning is really, really fun. But I am
here to share my idea: 20Winning does not always equal success. All around the world, we have
created the win-at-all-costs culture. We have become so focused on that end result instead of the
process, and particularly when the end result is a win. Real success is developing champions in
life for our world, win or lose. We may be able to plan our way to a win, but we can’t plan our
way to success. Back to 1990, 17when I was first made the head coach of the UCLAWomen’s
Gymnastics Team. I acted like a head coach whose only thought was to figure out how to win.
So 18I became tough-talking and mean. Our team asked me for a team meeting for over two
hours. They gave me examples of how my attitude was hurtful. Then I chose to change. It is so
much easier to give orders than to figure out how to motivate someone to be better. We all know
this motivation takes a really long time to take root. 19The key to promoting motivation is to
develop trust through patience and honesty. We are all coaches in some ways. We all have the
responsibility to develop champions in life for our world. This is what real success looks like,
and that is what we call a win-win.
