Today was my first day at senior high and it was hard. In high school, you have 4 minutes to get to your next class. My high school is very big and those 4 minutes to go from one class to another really isn’t a lot of time. Today I had to go from one end of the building to the other to get from science class to math class. I wanted to go to my locker first and leave my science book there, but that took time. I was worried about being late, and I was. The math teacher said, “Just be on time tomorrow, or you’ll have detention (放学后留校).”
After math, I went to art class. I like my art class a lot because I get to create things. The teacher there showed us how to make portraits (肖像). It does not just show how the person looks but what is important to understand the person.” We just did drawings today, but I know it’s going to be great. I like drawing.
I like my English class, too. I think the teacher is really supportive. Today we wrote about ourselves. The teacher said to just write what you think, and we’ll pay attention to punctuation (标点) later. We could write a paragraph or a poem, and I wrote a poem about myself. I thought it was a good poem, and the teacher said I had used good images (意象) to communicate my feelings.
Lunch was very hurried. I arrived at the dining room with 12 minutes to eat. I sat with people I didn’t know, and everyone was eating quickly. After lunch I signed up for a computer club. I need to learn how to use a computer well because my social studies teacher says it is the one skill you need in every class.

Some high school students think it useless to receive higher education. Therefore, they choose not to go to college. If you're one of them, think again. Here are some reasons why you should go to college and receive a good education there.
Schools and universities are the first places to get knowledge. We take that knowledge later on to build our careers after graduation. More knowledge will be gained after you start working, but without education, that job will not be within easy reach. Knowledge leads to knowledge.
While limited within the walls of the educational places, we openly explore other cultures of the world! We come to know that ours is not the only culture. Other cultures have valuable things to share, enriching our own. Education also makes us want to travel and exchange with various cultures, getting more experience.
When there's a recession in the economy(经济), those who attended college will be more likely to find a new job than those who only finished high school and have a limited skills set. The more education you have, the more chances you will get to improve the quality of your life as you have a better job and earn a higher salary.
When you're skillful and knowledgeable, you gain access to people of similar backgrounds and tastes. It means a good education leads to excellent networking. Good networking can benefit you a lot in your later life.
A good education makes you a more interesting person. You can talk about ideas and events instead of just other people and what's on sale in stores. An educated person doesn't gossip(说闲话), having a preference to discuss ideas and listen to what other people have to say.
8. What can we learn about college education from Paragraph 2
A. It offers you a chance to study abroad. B. It can allow you to gain more knowledge.

Survival and rescue stories from the deadly crash of TransAsia Airways Flight 235 in Taiwan are inspiring as well as exciting. They raise the question: Why do some passengers survive plane crashes while others sadly don't
Some of the survival games involve factors passengers largely can't control, like the weather, flight crew skills, the design of airline seats and the construction, maintenance (维修) and the age of the plane.
But passengers themselves can do a lot to improve their chances of survival simply by making smart choices and being informed.
Here are a few ideas to keep in mind:
* Seat choice. Experts differ. Have you heard of the “five-row rule” This refers to the idea that if you're sitting within five rows of an emergency exit, you have a statistically (统计地) better chance of surviving a crash.
* Listen to the safety talk. Yeah, it's boring. But it could save your life! The presentation-by video or by flight attendants-explaining what to do in case the plane goes down, offers key information like: How do I get out
* Read the safety card. Do you know that safety card in the pocket of the seat in front of you Think of it as a map leading you toward survival. Read it. It shows how the plane you're on will be evacuated (撤离) .
* Be aware of the exits. Plan your escape. Visualize how you-and perhaps children you're traveling with-are going to get out of the plane.
* Move quickly. You have 90 seconds to get out of the plane after a crash. Many passengers in plane crashes survive the initial impact. It's what happens next that often kills them. This includes fire, smoke and sometimes water. Sherwood advises using 90 seconds as a time frame for escaping.
12. At the beginning of the passage, the crash of TransAsia Airways is mentioned ________.
A. to share a story B. to introduce the topic
C. to introduce a flight D. to criticize the passengers
13. Of the following things, passengers can control ________.
A. the weather B. flight crew skills
C. the age of the plane D. making choices of the seat
14. Which of the following is true according to the passage
A. You should read the boring safety card on the desk in front of you.
B. You'd better sit within seven rows of an emergency exit.
C. You should design your escape way in advance.
D. You should wait a moment after a crash.
15. The author's purpose in writing this passage most probably is ________.
A. to offer us some tips on how to survive an air-crash
B. to offer us some tips on how to enjoy an air journey
C. to inform us of major services on the plane
D. to inform us of the danger of taking planes
【答案】12. B 13. D 14. C 15. A

He explained, “A portrait is a way of communicating with a person.

C. It can improve the quality of your daily life. D. It encourages you to travel around the world.
9. What does the underlined word "recession" in Paragraph 4 probably mean
A. change. B. drop. C. growth. D. support.
10. How can one benefit from a good education
A. You can gossip about others’ affairs. B. You are likely to study well at school.
C. You can work well with your coworkers. D. You get to know excellent people with similar interests.
11. What is the main idea of the passage
A. The benefits of attending college. B. The exchange with other cultures.
C. The access to good networking. D. The ways of college education.
D
14 Which of the following is true according to the passage
A. You should read the boring safety card on the desk in front of you.
B. You'd better sit within seven rows of an emergency exit.
C. You should design your escape way in advance.
D. You should wait a moment after a crash.
15 The author's purpose in writing this passage most probably is ________.
A. to offer us some tips on how to survive an air-crash
B. to offer us some tips on how to enjoy an air journey
C. to inform us of major services on the plane
D. to inform us of the danger of taking planes
