Would you take a trip if you couldn't use your cellphone A new tour company called Off the Grid is asking travellers to put their cellphones away and not even use them for photos. The company founder,Zach Beattie,is developing his business, using money he saved from a tech job at a mapping company. He's hired guides for every trip but will help lead the first few himself.
The first trip is to Lisbon,Portugal,in July.It takes 7 to 10 days, with small groups of up to 16people.Prices range from $1,500 to $1,650,including accommodations, meals and ground transportation. The plan includes at least three excursions(远足) and two social events, with an emphasis on unique experiences over bucket-list sightseeing. The tour also includes surfing lessons, yoga on the beach,a day of sailing and dinner with a local family.
“When you're somewhere new, there's a lot to see and a lot of cool and interesting people to meet,”Beatie said.“Your phone can distract(使分心)you.”The phone ban won't be enforced quite as strictly as it seems at first glance.“We want it to be voluntary,"he said."We're not collecting phones and throwing them in a locked trunk. It's held by you,but put in your pocket, and you state your intentions for the week, whether that's checking your social media once or twice a day or a total blackout.”
Tour-goers also get a“dumbphone”without Internet access that's loaded with numbers for group leaders and other participants, both for emergencies and to promote socializing. Participants may bring regular cameras, but Beattie is hiring a photographer for each tour so there will be plenty of photos to remember the trip.Once the trip is over, participants will have access to those photos for use in social media posts.

A British company has proposed releasing a GM (genetically modified) strain of the diamondback moth (菱形斑纹蛾), which has been developed to help reduce the population of these vegetable-eating insects.
Male diamondback moths carrying a deadly gene would be released which would cause their offsprings(后代)to die almost immediately. Then the fall in their numbers could help to increase crop yields for farmers.
Oxitec, the company which came up with the idea, hopes to begin trials next year but faces opposition from groups who say the untested technology could threaten wildlife and human health.
“Mass releases of GM insects into the British countryside would be impossible to recall if anything went wrong. Changing one part of an ecosystem can have knock-on effects on others in ways that are poorly understood. This could include an increase in different types of pests. Wildlife that feeds on insects could be harmed if there are changes to their food supply,” said Dr Helen Wallace, the director of Gene-Watch UK, who has sat on government advisory bodies.
Hadyn Parry, Oxitec’s chief executive, said there was demand from farmers for the technology and that using GM insects to kill the pests that feed on food crops is better for the environment than chemical sprays. The firm, which is supported by grants from the taxpayer, is developing a number of GM insects that would be used in Britain and around the world to protect crops and combat disease in humans.
Oxitec has contacted the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) to ask what controls, if any, should be put in place around GM moth trials. A spokesman said that while its officials and advisers have discussed Oxitec’s plans, there is yet to be a formal application for a trial. Consequently the department has not reached a view on whether it should go ahead.
28.People strongly object to the idea mainly because they think ______.
A.the technology won’t be as effective as chemical sprays
B.the technology may bring about knock-on effects on insects
C.the technology won’t be well controlled
D.the technology may not be good for wildlife and human health
29.What is Dr Helen Wallace’s attitude towards the idea
A.Disapproving. B.Positive. C.Doubtful. D.Not mentioned.
30.The underlined word “combat” in the fifth paragraph can be replaced by “______”.
A.struggle B.avoid C.fight D.contract
31.Which of the following can be learned from the text
A.Oxitec still hasn’t formed any plans to control the trials.
B.Oxitec has decided to begin the trial this year.
C.Taxpayers will not continue to support Oxitec’s research.
D.Farmers prefer GM insects to chemical sprays.

Nature has the power to alter an element’s identity with time and space. This is evident by the transformative effect Britain’s deep coal mines have been showing after decades of being one of the biggest reasons for pollution. Now, they’re being employed to supply green energy to the town of Gateshead. The town is the first place to experience something like this in the country, but the success of the phenomenon has encouraged the authorities to apply it to other towns.
In 2021, coal was just producing 2% of electricity in the UK. Most of the electricity in the country is being supplied through oil and gas. This has resulted in massive abandoned coal mines all across the country. As years went by, these mines were flooded with water, making it a source of geothermal(地热的) energy, which is used to generate heat and electricity. Gateshead hosts such a mine in its town, whose council, therefore, launched a mine water project in March 2023.
The authorities put in a large central heat pump in the mine. Mine water can often sit with a temperature of 45℃. The water is then pumped using appliances to home heat pumps. The process increases the temperature further. The water then goes ahead and warms up the interior space and home water supply. After the heat from the water has been used, it’s sent back to the mine where it again goes through the same process. The project has been successful in supplying low-carbon heating to 350 high-rise buildings, a college and several office buildings.
“Recovering heat from mine water below the ground within abandoned coal mines provides an exciting opportunity to generate a low-carbon secure supply of heat, benefitting people living or working in buildings on the coalfields,” said Gareth Farr, head of heat and by-product innovation at the Coal Authority.
The water resources through the mines are estimated to be two billion cubic meters or half the amount of water in Loch Ness. Farr added, “With many millions of people living upon abandoned coalfields in Great Britain, the potential for mine water heat could be significant.”
32. What does the town of Gateshead feature
A. It’s been one of the most heavily polluted areas.
B. It has the most deep coal mines nationally.
C. It mainly relies on geothermal energy.
D. It is the first one to reuse abandoned coal mines.
33. Why were many coal mines abandoned in the UK
A. They were quite remote. B. Prices of coal declined a lot.
C. There weren’t enough miners. D. The UK prioritizes cleaner energy.
34. What is implied in the last paragraph
A. The number of abandoned coal mines is stably increasing.
B. The future of sourcing energy from coal mines is promising.
C. The dependence on water resources in the UK is decreasing.
D. The technique to take advantage of mine water is impressive.
35. What is the text mainly about
A. An innovative way to obtain green energy.
B. A method of living in harmony with nature.
C. A national project for abandoned facilities.
D. A discussion on the future of coal mines.

His intelligence and adorable personality never fail to bring joy and laughter into our lives. He always seems to know when I need a comforting presence, and his playful bahavior never fails to cheer me up.
Max’s intelligence is truly remarkable. He has learned numerous tricks and commands over the years, and he never ceases to amaze us with his problem-solving skills. Max, my loyal golden retriever, was lying peacefully beside me, enjoying a well-deserved nap. However, as the day drew to a close, Max suddenly sprang to his feet, his ears got a lift, and his eyes fixed intently on something outside the window. Make Better Use of Digital Reading
Nowadays, digital reading is becoming increasingly popular. It offers several advantages and drawbacks.
On one hand, digital reading provides great convenience, allowing us to carry an entire library with us. Additionally, it enhances the experience with interactive elements such as videos. However, potential distractions from other apps on the device can be a drawback. Furthermore, some argue that the lack of physical books takes away the sensory experience and emotional connection with reading.
In my opinion, we should develop digital discipline and strike a balance by occasionally incorporating traditional books into our reading. By enjoying the benefits and minimizing the drawbacks, we can fully enjoy digital reading.

As I approached the window, I witnessed my elderly neighbor, Mr. Thompson, lying motionless in his backyard. Without hesitation, I rushed outside, with Max following closely behind. Quickly assessing the situation, I dialed emergency services and requested immediate assistance. While waiting for the ambulance to arrive, I tried to comfort Mr. Thompson, who appeared to be unconscious. Max, sensing the urgency of the situation, remained by our side, his presence providing a sense of calm and reassurance. Within minutes, the ambulance arrived, and the doctors quickly attended to Mr. Thompson.
In the days following Mr. Thompson’s accident, Max and I visited him at the hospital as often as we could. Max’s presence seemed to uplift Mr. Thompson’s spirits, and he expressed his gratitude for our timely intervention. He shared that he had been feeling lonely and isolated since his wife passed away, and Max’s companionship brought him a lot of joy. Undoubtedly Max was not only a cherished member of our family but also a guardian angel to those in need. We realized that pets are not just companions but also invaluable members of our family, capable of extraordinary acts of kindness and bravery.
