A recent study from a team of South Korean researchers suggests that eating alone often may lead to poor eating habits and poor food choices. Specifically, the study found that men who ate alone more than twice a week had a greater risk of developing high blood pressure, high cholesterol (胆固醇) and diabetes (糖尿病).
For children, eating with their families is not only about preventing bad outcomes ( 结 果)—it is also about developing good ones.
In 2014, the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development(OECD) looked at data from nearly three-quarters of the world’s countries. In the report, titled “The Importance of Family Dinners (VIII) ”, researchers say that “teens who have frequent family dinners are more likely to say their parents know a lot about what’s going on in their lives” . They also claim that when teens say they feel closer to their
parents, they are less likely to use drugs and alcohol .
Another study from the University of Montreal found that children who ate with their families experience long-term physical and mental health benefits ( 好 处) .These children were physically in better shape and drank fewer sugary soft drinks. These children also seemed to have better social skills and they were less aggressive (好斗的).
Professor Linda Pagani says that mealtimes shared with parents “likely provide young children with first-hand social interactions, discussions of social issues (事件) and day-to-day concerns” . She adds that they may likely help the child have better communication skills with others.

The world is full of amazing things. Let’s see China’s amazing technology! Nowadays, we are used to using our phone to get a map of our location. But how do our phones know where in the world, we are and in which direction we are going It is all thanks to the satellites in space that help our phones calculate our position. Depending on where you are around the world, your phone may be receiving data from different systems. That’s how the BeiDou Navigation Satellite System(BDS)works in China.
The BDS nowadays is more advanced than the first version(版本)ofthe system, which was sent into space in 2000. The present version has better technology and more satellites. Farmers are able to put the data to good use when operating smart farming machines. For example, the BDS can be used to control driverless trucks as they turn up the fields.
Among its findings was the fact that students who shared a main meal with their families were less likely ( 可 能) to skip school. Children who eat a main meal with their families are also less likely to abuse drugs and alcohol (吸毒酗酒).
In the report, titled “The Importance of Family Dinners (VIII) ”, researchers say that
“teens who have frequent family dinners are more likely to say their parents know a lot about what’s going on in their lives” . They also claim that when teens say they feel closer to their parents, they are less likely to use drugs and alcohol .
10. The study found that a man eating alone a week can easily suffer from diseases.

11. Children eating with their families are more likely to .
A. drink more sugary soft drinks B. do well in their studies at school
C. be more socially active and aggressive D. have a closer relationship with their parents

A. To introduce her. B. To add a new point.
C. To explain further. D. To provide background information.
13. What can be the best title for the text
A. Benefits of eating together B. Advantages of eating alone

Shen Jilan lived a meaningful life before she died at the age of 91. She was a pioneer who encouraged women in her hometown to work instead of staying at home. Her advice on gender (性别) pay equality (公平) became a key part of the 1954Constitution of the People’s Republic of China (PRC).
She was born in 1929 in a village in Shanxi province. It was a time when many women still followed the old custom of foot-binding and were asked to stay at home.
In 1951, the government of Xigou village formed a cooperative (合作社) to boost (大力 发展) farming. Villagers tried hard to make ends meet, and the labor force was not enough. Shen was the deputy head (副社长) of the cooperative and started to persuade women to join men in doing fieldwork. However, Shen soon found a problem-pay inequality.
“Men got 10 work points a day, but we only got five points at most no matter how much work we did,” Shen told Xinhua NewsAgency. The work points were a payment system at that time.
Shen organized a competition to plant seeds ( 种子) to prove that women could do the same, or more, work than men. The women won the competition as many of the men stopped to smoke. After that, the women were given equal pay.
Shen soon became famous across the country. In 1953, she attended the World Congress of Women in Copenhagen as a role model for women’s liberation (解放). The next year, she attended the first session of the First NPC, during which the first Constitution of the PRC was passed, establishing “equal pay for equal work” as she had advised.

How to Use a Modern Public Library
Has it been a while since your last visit to a public library If so, you may be surprised to learn that libraries have changed for the better. It’s been years since they were dusty little rooms with books. They have changed themselves into places where you can develop your love of knowledge, meet interesting people, or nd out how to start a business.
Check out a book. While libraries still loan out(出借) books, you’ll nd it easier to get a copy of whatever you’re looking for with a cooperative network of area libraries. By such networks, libraries share their books with each other through the use of delivery vehicles. Once the book you’ve requested is delivered to the nearest branch (分店), they will inform you by e-mail, so you can pick it up.
Check out other things. The library is now a multimedia zone ( 多媒体 区域), loaded with information in many formats (载体形式). You can borrow movies on DVDs, music on CDs and popular magazines. Some libraries even loan out toys and games. If a popular magazine you want isn’t offered and the library keeps a list of such requests, they may bring it in when enough interest is shown.
Join reading groups. Libraries will often hold reading-group meetings aimed to various age groups. Perhaps you’d like to learn a language or improve your English, the library may organize a language group you could join. If you have difficulties reading, ask about special reading opportunities. Your library might be able to help you. And you might nd it relaxing to bring your small kid to a half-hour Story Time while you sit quietly in a corner with a good book.
Start a business using the help of your local library. If you want to have a business of your own, your local library can become a launch ( 发起) space for it.
The system is not finished, there will be lots of BDS satellites. In the future, those satellites will allow us to discover the position of objects with millimetre accuracy(精确度).
Even though more satellites are being added to the system, the BDS has already been put to use. More than 40, 000 Chinese fishing boats are using the system now. These boats are easily to be searched at sea. They are able to communicate with people on land as well as give the exact locations of ships in trouble.
The BDS is being used on land as well. Of course, it’s not hard to imagine how the system is helping the police do their job. So does farming. Farmers are able to put the data to good use when operating smart farming machines. For example, the BDS can be used to control driverless trucks as they turn up the fields. Farmers are also using drones(无人机).
Although the BDS is a product of China, the developers are actively developing international cooperation (合 作 ) . Developers predict that the system will be not only popular within China, the BDS will undoubtedly bring lots of advantages to China and the rest of the world.
