Born in a small village, I saw how busy farmers were in spring, and what the season meant to them. Spring is a time when the land wakes up from its long sleep, and the fields are ready for crops (庄稼). If you are lazy in spring, you will get nothing in autumn. So, farmers seem to compete with time in spring.
When I was a little girl, every weekend I was busy planting crops. Whatever it was, I had fun and learned a lot. For example, when we planted potatoes, we needed to cut the sprouted (发芽的) potatoes into pieces and made sure every piece of “seed” (种子) had one or two sprouts. It was really like a math game.
Farm work is also teamwork. That’s why every spring field is busy with people of all ages working in it. While planting beans, my father dug small holes, and I carefully put some seeds into each hole. The work was hard and boring, but when we worked together, it seemed easier and more interesting.
I felt magic of life in spring as well. In a few weeks, the seeds sprouted, encouraging us to care for them by watering and so on. As time went by, they grew into healthy plants.
Because of these wonderful childhood experiences, I hold such a special feeling for spring.

Humans share the Earth with all kinds of wildlife and have lived in peace with them for thousands of years.
Many of our animal friends may not be around for much longer, however, and many of them are in great danger. According to a study, the populations of animals including mammals (哺乳动物), birds and fish have fallen by an average of 60 percent since 1970. What’s worse, a study in 2014 found that species (物种) are dying out 1,000 times faster than normal.
Sadly, it is because of humans that animals are in this situation now. By increasing human development, we may end up seriously harming the environment on which animals live and depend. Human development has caused pollution in oceans and three quarters of the world’s land to be affected (影响). The balance between animals and their ecosystems has been greatly harmed by humans.
Luckily, many people have realized that our action in fact does harm to animals, risking our own lives as a result, so effective steps have been quickly taken to save both these endangered animals as well as ourselves. The World Wildlife Fund has called on governments and businesses to protect nature. In China, many natural reserves (保护区) have been built up and harmful behavior such as selling rhino horns (犀牛角), tiger bones and ivory has been banned (禁止).
People have been taking steps in the right direction, which is encouraging news. The numbers of many animals have increased. The protection of animals still has a long way to go. In the end, to protect animals is to protect ourselves, and we should spare no effort toward living in harmony (和谐) with nature.

Pound was a famous professor of Law College of Harvard. Although he was 80, he still worked eight hours every day no matter what the weather was like.
His workmate once said, “Though he was old, he kept on walking from his house to the office. It would take him an hour to do so, but he insisted (坚持) because it made him get a sense of success. I admired him. He not only made great achievements in his field, but also came up with creative teaching methods to inspire students.”
One day, a student got out of the professor’s office with a lot of books. He complained (抱怨), “He always answers my questions with just a yes or ①______. At the same time, he always gives me too many books and advises me to read them again and again. I have to spend plenty of time ②______ the answers on my own.”
By accident, the professor knew what the student complained about. He explained to him patiently. “This is the method I have learnt—the harder you work independently, the better solutions you will get. If you can make full use of the books, you will probably become a good lawyer.” He believed “Teaching people to fish is better than giving them fish”.
Ten years later, the student became a well-known lawyer. When he returned to Law College of Harvard, he met the professor again. He thanked the professor. Besides, he gave away many books to Harvard.

Think about these years, who has helped us receive COVID-19 vaccinations (疫苗) in order. Who has worked around the clock helping to organize COVID-19 tests It is the community doctors and nurses that make sure we have a healthy life.
And what about our local police They protect our families and valuable things. Especially after a heavy rain, they always come to save the people.
Think about all the other service workers in our community. Cleaners collect waste and rubbish and keep our community sanitary. Road workers repair traffic signs and fix holes in the streets to protect not just us, but also our cars! And think about what would happen without teachers in our school.
Think again about what we eat, what we wear and what we use every day. We cannot produce them, but we use them all the time. The tireless workers keep our community running. We need them but in fact, we are one of them. So let’s support and help each other. Only when we pull together can we make our community a better place.

I’m Maria, an exchange student in a junior high school in Wuhan. I have three roses here: a red one, a white one and a yellow one. These roses are to thank three groups of people.
I give the red rose to my friends. When I started school here, my Chinese was not good and some of my mistakes were very funny. I once tried to say “xiexie”, but I said “xiaxia” instead. But they didn’t laugh at me. They taught me to say many things in Chinese and kindly invited me to join them. Today thanks to their kindness, my Chinese is much better and we have become friends.
I give the white rose to my teachers, who have taught me that there is no success without effort. When I started running in the 800-meter race, I always finished last and I just wanted to give up. But the P. E. teacher, Ms. Huang, helped me a lot. She ran along with me and she said to me. “You will never succeed if you give up!” I’ve learned to try my best, not only with running but with whatever else I do!
I give the yellow rose to my parents for teaching me that love is about trust. When I wanted to learn the violin, my father told me that I should work much harder at math. I was disappointed.
However, on the morning of my birthday, I woke up to find a beautiful violin at my bedside. There was a note from my father “T am sure you will be good at music. I believe that you will be better at math.”
I truly show my thanks to my friends, teachers and parents for the three most important things that I have learned from them. These three things are friendship, effort and trust.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is now able to draw amazing pictures according to your text. This sounds cool, doesn’t it However, there’s a good chance that some of these new pictures are based on Greg Rutkowski’s works.
Rutkowski is a Polish artist. His style is now regularly used by Stable Diffusion, an AI art maker. The tool allows anyone to turn texts into pictures. For example, type in “A man fights a dragon with magic fire, Greg Rutkowski.” The program will then produce something similar to Rutkowski’s own works. Some of these pictures have been taken from art shopping websites. This is often done without the knowledge of their artists. And artists like Rutkowski have had enough.
At first, Rutkowski was surprised by his popularity in the AI world. However, when he searched for his name on the internet, the results showed him plenty of artworks that looked like his but weren’t.
Artists say they might lose income (收入) as people start depending on AI programs for artworks. But the creation of art should also be a lot more personal. Karla Ortiz, an American artist, says art is often closely linked to its creator. It shouldn’t be easily re-created.
Tom Mason is the CTO (首席技术官) of Stability. AI, the company behind Stable Diffusion. He says that AI art is a completely new thing. March 8th is International Women’s Day (IWD) — a day to celebrate women. The day reminds people that the work of women is important, that women face special problems, and that women are still not treated fairly in many places in the world.
The United Nations (UN) has been officially promoting (正式推广)IWD since 1977. On Friday, the UN held a special event in honor of the day. The UN says that around the world, many countries are changing their laws to better protect the rights (权利)of women. There is also progress in women’s education. There are more girls in school now than ever before.
Though the UN is celebrating things that have gone well for women, they are also pointing out challenges. All in all, there is progress, but it’s not coming fast enough.
One worry is violence (暴力)against women. Though there are signs that violence against women is being taken more seriously, many problems remain.
Another worry is that it’s still difficult for women to get the equal (同等的)pay and position for doing the same work. The UN says that around the world, women get paid about 23% less than men. Of course, bosses are often the ones who make decisions about pay. The UN says that among the 500 largest companies in the US, less than 7% of the leaders are women.
There’s still a long way to go to achieve the equality (平等)completely.

Have you ever done something that you didn’t really want to do, just because other people were doing it All of us feel pressure to follow others at times, and this can lead us to pretend that we like things more than we actually do. When we do this, we’re not being true to ourselves. It’s important to be honest about your feelings with yourself because this can help you ① happier and less upset.
If you want some time alone, to relax or read a book, then being true to yourself might mean saying no to the friends who want you to play. Or if your friends are playing a game that you don’t enjoy, then being true to yourself might mean doing something else instead. Being true to yourself is when your actions match how you really feel.
When we keep doing things we don’t like, it can make us feel uncomfortable, worried or sad. Naomi Richards, a children’s life coach and writer of Being Me said, “Children need to know who they are, their values and their beliefs. If they know about these, they won’t do things which they know are wrong, and they will have a healthy self-esteem.” Self-esteem is how you feel about yourself.
One part of being true to yourself is in how you speak to other people, and being OK with saying “no”. Richards explains, “You can be true to yourself by ② how to say ‘no’ and keeping your beliefs.” However, she adds that being true to yourself is also about “being honest with yourself and what you want and need, and listening to your feelings”. Finally, Richards says, “You can learn how to be true to yourself by being yourself—not changing your ideas and actions to follow.”

One day, she invited me over and I said yes. I was too shocked to refuse her invitation. Actually, no one had invited me over to play before. But this girl wanted to see me.
She lived on the fourth floor in a two-room apartment with her big family. When we got to the room she shared with her sister, she took out a big case of Barbies, which was really surprising. I had never played with them. But we sat on the floor laughing as we made up crazy stories about the Barbies. That’s when we found out that we both wanted to be writers when we were older. We both had wild imaginations. We had a great time that afternoon.
She charmed the whole neighborhood. The bookstore owners lent her fashion magazines, the movie theater gave her free passes and the pizza place let her have free slices. Soon I was included in her magic world. We slept over at each other’s houses and spent every free moment together. I let my hair grow out and learned to love being tall.
