Delia was a young pianist. Her husband, Joe, was a young artist.
Each of them was taking lessons: Joe with a famous art teacher, and Delia with a great pianist from Germany. Their teachers were the very best, so lessons were expensive, more than they could really afford, but ... when you love your art, nothing is too much.
But soon the money began to run out, and they couldn’t afford the lessons any more.
Then one day Delia came back home and told Joe that she had met a man, whose daughter Sally, wanted to learn the piano, and he was going to pay her $50 an hour.
“Delia,” Joe said, “I’ll be much happier if you keep up your lessons.” Delia said it didn’t matter. “When I’ve had some money, I’ll continue.” But Joe also decided to stop his lessons, to draw pictures and sell them.
A few days later, Joe came home and proudly took $200 from his pocket. “I met a man from Vermont,” he said, “who bought one of my pictures. And he wants to buy more!”
So the two of them were very happy. They didn’t have to worry any more about money.
Then, one day, Joe came home and saw that Delia’s hand was wrapped in a bandage (绷带). He asked her what had happened. “Oh,” said Delia. “My student, Sally, asked me to make some coffee for her. I dropped the coffee and burned my hand. Sally went straight to the drugstore and got this bandage for me.”
“Delia, what have you been doing the last two weeks ” Joe asked. She tried not to tell him, but the tears came. “Oh Joe, I couldn’t get any students, so I worked as a waitress in a restaurant. Today, I burned my hand with hot water. So I can’t work any more. But we’ll still have money from the man in Vermont, won’t we ”
Joe looked at her. “There’s no man in Vermont,” he said. “I’ve been working in a drugstore, and today someone came in to buy bandages for a woman who’d burned her hand. So when I saw you, well, I guessed.”
They both laughed.

Haili Smith, 16, says she and her sister, Brooke, “have very different tastes in books.” Haili likes horror stories. Brooke, 13, prefers fantasy. What they both believe is that kids would like to read more if they are connected with a book’s characters (人物). That’s why, in 2020, they started Books Like Me. The group donates (捐赠) culturally different children’s books to schools.
“We didn’t really like reading a few years ago”, Haili told TIME for Kids. “Then we started to look for books that had characters we saw ourselves in. It made us want to read more. We thought we could share that with students, because we knew that this wasn’t something that changed us only.”
Haili and Brooke started with an Amazon Wish List of books they liked. They shared the list on social media, asking for donations of these titles. Soon, they began receiving boxes of new books to give away to schools. Also, requests have come in from schools nationwide. So far, Haili and Brooke have given away more than 16, 000 books.
Anitra Carter teaches fourth grade at a primary school in Florida. She says donations from Books Like Me have gotten her students more interested in reading. “It excites them when seeing a character that may represent (代表;象征) them or look similar to them” Carter says.
Over the years, Haili and Brooke have been invited to speak with educators about the importance of culturally diverse books. They’ve also taken books directly to students. At a book fair in Florida, “I was at a table showing kids the books and they were picking them out,” Haili recalls. “They all looked so happy when they found a book that really connect with them.”
That, of course, is the goal. “I hope, and I think,” Haili says, “that all kids should ▲ so that they enjoy reading.”

Cats communicate a kind of messages using cat body language. Examples include arching (弓起) their backs as a signal of fear or attack and slowly blinking (眨) their eyes to signal relaxation. Mouth open and no teeth showed suggests a feeling of playfulness. A cat which chooses to lie on its back shows happiness, trust and comfort.
Just like dogs, a twitching (抽动) tail can mean a little anger while a tail held high suggests confidence. Cats will twitch their tails when hunting or angry, while larger twitching suggests displeasure. They may also twitch their tails when playing. A tail held high is a sign of happiness, or can be used as a greeting towards humans or other cats while half-raised shows less pleasure, and unhappiness is expressed with a tail held low.
Some signals however, are often misunderstood. It is important to keep in mind that each cat may show its feelings with different body language. For example, a cat rubbing (擦) its body along an arm or leg of its owner is not only a way to attract attention or perhaps, to ask for food; it is also a way of “marking” its owner as its own. Usually a cat with its tail held high and twitching shows excitement, but this is often mistaken for anger.
Many people fail or are too slow to understand the silent body language of cats. And they may have the wrong idea that cats are cold-hearted, dishonest or not clever. To understand cats, people must watch a cat closely and learn what its body signals tell them.
12. Which cat body language shows that a cat is relaxed
A. Lying on its stomach. B. Blinking its eyes slowly.
C. Holding its tail high. D. Moving its ears back
13. According to the passage, a cat will twitch its tail ________.
① when it feels sleepy ② when it is hunting ③ when it feels angry ④ when it is playing
A. ①②③ B. ②③④ C. ①③④ D. ①②④
14. How many meanings does a cat’s rubbing its body along its owner have
A. 2. B. 3. C. 4. D. 5.
15. The last paragraph wants to tell us ________.
A. many people often have right opinions on cats B. it is not easy to understand cats’ body language
C. every cat has its own special body language D. we should learn more about cats’ body language

Dear Candy,
I’m glad to hear from you. From your email I know that your parents are so busy with their work that they don’t have time to accompany you, which makes you feel lonely and helpless. Here are my suggestions.
Firstly, have an open and honest conversation with your parents about how you feel and let them know that you need their company. Besides, you’d better learn to look after yourself and regard it as a great opportunity to develop your independence in advance. What’s more, it can also help you improve your ability to manage your time, which is quite beneficial for your future study and life.
Hope my suggestions will be useful to you.
Yours,
Mike
