UK schools are allowed to punish pupils who break the school rules. Detention is a method that UK schools use to punish children. It means that students are asked to stay at school at the end of the school day. They usually stay for 30 minutes or an hour.
Freya MacDonald was a 15-year-old student from Scotland. She made the news in the UK when she refused to accept her school’s punishment and took legal action(提起法律诉讼). Freya’s family said that she was given detention many times for little things such as having drinks in class and coming into school through a fire door. The teenager said that it was not legal to keep a pupil in the school building if the student didn’t want to be there.
According to Scottish law, every child has the right to get an education. Freya said that repeated detention had bad influence on her education and made it difficult for her to study. She refused to return to school until the school respected(尊重) her rights.
Hundreds of schools in Scotland were told not to use detention as a punishment because of Freya’s legal action.
