You have probably heard about sports coaches, fitness coaches, vocal music teachers, career
counselors, psychiatrists (精神病医师 ) and other specialists who teach skills and help us cope with
daily life.
But there’s a rapidly growing kind of professional who does a little bit of everything. She or he is
called a “ life coach” . People who are at crossroads in their lives and corporations that want to give
certain employees a career boost are turning to them for help.
The idea that one person’ s success story can change other people’ s lives for the better goes back
at least to the 1930s. Dale Carnegie’s famous self-improvement program “How to Win Friends and
Influence People” came along soon thereafter.
But this new style of life coaches includes more than enthusiastic speakers or writers. They use their
own experiences in business, sports, military service, or psychotherapy (心 理 治 疗 ) to help others
make critical life decisions.
They often give their approach a slogan, such as “ energy coaching” or “ fearless living” or “working
yourself happy”.
Dave Lakhani in Boise, Idaho, for instance, works with salespeople to develop what he calls a “ road
map” . He says an ongoing relationship with a coach is like having a personal fitness trainer for one’s
career and life outside work.
Lakhani’s Bold Approach coaching firm also donates some of its time to help people who are anything
but successful — including battered women and struggling single mothers.
But others in the so-called “helping professions” are not thrilled about the life-coaching movement.
They say that anyone, trained or untrained, can call himself or herself a life coach, and that slick (华
而不实的 ) promoters who mess with people’s lives can do more harm than good.

Many people have difficulty in getting up in the morning. This might be called laziness, but Dr.
Kleitman has a new explanation. He has proved that everyone has a daily energy cycle.
During the hours when you work, you may say that you're hot. That's true. The time of day when you
feel most energetic is when your cycle of body temperature is at its peak. For some people the peak
comes during the morning. For others it comes in the afternoon or evening. No one has discovered why
this is so, but it leads to such familiar words as: Get up, John! You'll be late for work again! The possible
explanation for the trouble is that John is at his temperature-and-energy peak in the evening. Much
family quarrelling ends when husbands and wives realize what these energy cycles mean, and which
cycle each member of the family has.
You can't change your energy cycle, but you can learn to make your life fit it better. Habit can help, Dr.
Kleitman believes. Maybe you're sleepy in the evening but feel you must stay up late anyway. If so,
staying up later than you want to may counteract your cycle in some way. If our energy is low in the
morning but you have an important job to do early in the day, rise before your usual hour. This won't
change your cycle, but you'll get up steam and work better at your low point.
Get off to a slow start which saves your energy. Get up with a comfortable yawn and stretch. Sit on
the edge of the bed for a minute before putting your feet on the floor. Avoid the troublesome search for
clean clothes by laying them out the night before.
32. Dr. Kleitman explains that a person is difficult to get up in the morning probably because of
A. his own laziness B. his own energy cycle C. his own habit
33. According to the passage, people's energy peak may come
A. in the morning B. in the evening C. at different hours
34.When will a couple in a family end their quarrel
A. Get up in the morning.
B.After they know the energy cycles of each of them
C.After the husband apologizes to his wife
35. What does the underlined word "it” in the third paragraph refer to
A. The life. B. The good habit. C. The energy cycle.
36. If the finding is true, it's best to
A. do your work at the energy peak
4 / 8
B. manage to control your temper
C. work at the bottom of energy cycle
C
Give yourself a test. Which way is the wind blowing How many kinds of wildflowers can be seen
from your front door If your awareness is as sharp as it could be, you’ll have no trouble answering
these questions.
Most of us observed much more as children than we do as adults. A child’s day is filled with
fascination, newness and wonder. Curiosity gave us all a natural awareness. But distinctions that were
sharp to us as children become unclear ; we are numb (麻木的) to new stimulation(刺激), new ideas .
Relearning the art of seeing the world around us is quite simple, although it takes practice and requires
breaking some bad habits.
The first step in awakening senses is to stop predicting what we are going to see and feel before it
occurs. This blocks awareness. One chilly night when I was hiking in the Rocky Mountains with some
students, I mentioned that we were going to cross a mountain stream. The students began complaining
about h ow cold it would be. We reached the stream, and they unwillingly walked ahead. They were
almost knee - deep when they realized it was a hot spring. Later they all admitted they’d felt cold water
at first.
Another block to awareness is the obsession(痴迷)many of us have with naming things . I saw bird
watchers who spotted a bird, immediately looked it up in field guides, and said, a " ruby - crowned
kinglet " and checked it off. They no longer paid attention to the bird and never learned what it was
doing.
The pressures of " time " and " destination " are further blocks to awareness. I encountered many
hikers who were headed to a distant camp - ground with just enough time to get there before dark. It
seldom occurred to them to wander a bit, to take a moment to see what’s around them. I asked them
what they’d seen. “Oh, a few birds,” they said. They seemed bent on their destinations.
Nature seems to unfold to people who watch and wait. Next time you take a walk, no matter where it
is, take in all the sights, sounds and sensations. Wander in this frame of mind and you will open a new
dimension to your life.
( )47. According to Paragraph 2, compared with adults, children are more .
A. anxious to do wonders B. sensitive to others’ feelings
C. eager to explore the world around them
( )48. What idea does the author convey in Paragraph 3
A. To avoid jumping to conclusions.
B. To stop complaining all the time.
C. To follow the teacher’s advice.
( )49.The bird watchers’ behavior shows that they
A. are very patient in their observation.
B. are really fascinated by nature.
C. care only about the names of birds.
( )50. Why do the hikers take no notice of the surroundings during the journey
5 / 8
A. The natural beauty isn’t attractive to them.
B. They focus on arriving at the camp in time.
C The forest in the dark is dangerous for them.
( )51.In the passage, the author intends to tell us we should
A. fill our senses to feel the wonders of the world.
B. get rid of some bad habits in our daily life.
C. open our mind to new things and ideas.

It is important for you to be a good listener in class. Much of what you will have to learn will be
presented verbally (口头上) by your teachers. Just hearing what your teachers say is not the same as
listening to what they say. Listening is a cognitive (认知的) act that requires you to pay attention and
think about and mentally process what you hear. Here are some things you should do to be a good
listener in class.
*Be Cognitively Ready to Listen When You Come to Class. ____52____ Review your notes from
previous class sessions. Think about what you know about the topic that will be covered in class that
day.

*Be an Active Listener. ____54___ Use this to your advantage by evaluating what is being said and
trying to anticipate what will be said next. Take good written notes about what your teacher says. While
you can think faster than your teacher can speak, you cannot write faster than your teacher can speak.
____55___
*Meet the Challenge. Don’t give up and stop listening when you find the information being presented
difficult to understand. Listen even more carefully at these times and work hard to understand what is
being said. ____56____
A.Listen with an open mind.
B.Your attitude is important.

It seems like technology is puters and smart phones are at the center of almost
everything we do. They constantly (持续地) require our attention . We text our friends with them
during the day, sleep with them by our beds and check our messages as soon as we wake up.
In the future we will use calm technology which was first developed by scientist Mark Weiser in the
1970s. In his opinion, calm technology works quietly but constantly. We know it is there, but we don2t
6 / 8
pay much attention to it. According to Mark , the best technology should be invisible (隐形的) and let
you live your life .
We already use many different types of calm technology in our everyday life. Do you have a smoke
alarm in your house That smoke alarm is always there, checking the air for smoke and quietly keeping
you safe. It only reminds you it’s there when you’ve burnt your bread! Or there may be lights in your
home or school. When somebody passes in front of their sensor(传感器), the lights turn on . You don’t
think about this type of technology until you see the light go on.
In the future, our houses will use calm technology to open the door for us. Or even to choose the best
music for our mood. The minute we walk through the door, our house will respond by turning on the
lights and music, and perhaps even starting to prepare our dinner!
