一、阅读理解
Choose the best answer (根据短文内容,选择最恰当的答案)
You want to know about my staying in America, right Well, to tell you the truth, it is really an eye-opening experience to study here.
In China, I had English classes five times a week since fifth grade. However, I didn’t know how different textbook English could be from everyday English until I came to Hotchkiss School, Connecticut.
When I first studied English, I was told to say, “I am fine.” when people say “How are you ” But in the US, I found that people say, “I am good.” or “I’m tired.”
One day, someone greeted me with “What’s up ” It made me confused. I thought for a moment and then smiled because I didn’t know what to say.
Since then, I have discovered more and more differences between Chinese and US cultures.
To my surprise, US girls spend a lot of time in the burning sun to get a tan (日晒后的颜色). However, in China, girls try every possible way to get their skin paler, or “whiter”.
I was also surprised by how hard-working US students are.
In China, schoolwork is almost everything, so we study hard and that’s it. But here, a “good” student gets good grades, does a lot for the public and plays sports or music.
The kids here are so talented, I am starting to be sorry that I gave up playing the piano at an early age and that I have never thought about sports.

The FIFA World Cup 2022 has begun in Qatar. It is the biggest and also the most eye-catching sporting event in the world. But this year’s event looks quite different for two main reasons.
First, it’s the first time in history that the event is happening in winter, from Nov. 20 to Dec. 18. This is because Qatar is a desert country and in summer the temperature can be as high as 42℃. So it’s too hot to play outdoor sports. But it’s still warm in winter. The temperature in the stadiums (体育场) can be around 20℃ to 30℃, which is just right for the event.
Another reason is that Chinese elements(元素), from brand support to construction(建筑), can be found both on and off the field. The idea of “Made in China” is also catching the world’s attention.
According to Global Data, a data analysis and consulting company based in London, Chinese companies have put $1.4 billion (about 10 billion yuan) into the event, making them its biggest sponsors(赞助商).
China Railway Construction Corporation designed and built the Lusail Stadium. With 80,000 seats, it’s the largest of the eight stadiums for the World Cup. As the main stadium, it will hold the closing ceremonies and 10 games, including the final. Besides the stadium, Chinese companies from Guangdong and Zhejiang have provided more than 10,000 container houses for tourists and soccer fans to live in.
“The World Cup sponsorship by a large number of Chinese companies shows China’s economic power and makes the world feel the power of Chinese brands,” Song Xiangqing, vice-president of the Commerce Economy Association of China, told China Daily.

Wang Fei, a Chinese student, and Mary, an American student studying Chinese in China, were in a supermarket. They saw a young man 13 down the stairs. In his hurry, he missed the last two steps and fell onto the ground. He tried to stand up 14 people around him laughed. Luckily, he seemed to be OK.
Mary found Wang Fei smiling a little and was not happy 15 it. “Tell me, Wang Fei, how could people laugh when someone fell like that Why didn’t they go up and ask him if he was hurt ”
Wang Fei said, “Because they knew he wasn’t hurt too 16 .”
“But I still don’t understand. A fall is a fall. In my culture, people would never laugh!”
This is an example. The Chinese and the western will think and act differently when seeing 17 a thing. Chinese people are used to laughing or smiling. Very often the person who is in embarrassing situation would also laugh or smile to get out of it. 18 , if someone gets hurt seriously, it will not be a laughing matter any more. People will help him or her instead.
But, in that case, a westerner will rush over and help the person get up. If a westerner falls, he or she, like a Chinese person, may try to make a joke if he or she is not hurt. If two close friends are walking together, and one falls 19 clearly isn’t hurt, a common joke is to say “Have a nice trip.”
So different people have different habits and different countries have different cultures.

Each year, many Chinese people go abroad because of all kinds of reasons. They are becoming younger and younger year by year. Even some Chinese parents send their children to foreign countries when they are only in a middle school. They think their children can get a wider view, less academic(学业) competition and family honour. But life can be hard for young people there. At first, they have to face the culture differences and language problems. However, these are not always the most difficult things to overcome. To most children, controlling(管理) themselves well is a big challenge when they study alone abroad.

And usually there isn’t too much homework. Students have lots of free time to do some activities. Some of his friends spend their whole year’s money in the first two months of the new term. So they have to ask their parents for some more money.
On one hand, studying abroad can help students learn foreign language quickly and open up their eyes, but on the other hand, some children may feel lonely, become bad, lose themselves, etc. Many problems may happen to them. Close your eyes and imagine you are living in the next two centuries or more. You’ll be living in a world filled with smart robots, which will help you to take care of your children, or your elderly parents in your home. You’ll live much longer thanks to the medicine made by genetic (基因的) science. And mankind may be going farther in space than ever before—you will be living on the Moon or Mars.
How should we view the changes that wait for us in the future Should we be optimistic (乐观的) about the years ahead, or worried about what the future holds Some scientists and experts are having a discussion about how technology, science and society will develop in the future.
“I’m looking forward to the day when more technology will come to my life,” says John Searle, a professor at the University of California Berkeley Philosophy, “because I think further research in such areas as genetics, physics, chemistry and medicine will help us to live longer and happier.”
Hugh Herr, at MIT’s Biomechatronics Group, says, “The growing role of technology in our lives is a big problem. Machines taking over what humans do is not a good thing. The long-term future we are building will have no space left for human beings because computers are much better than humans.”

The year 2021 saw big changes around the world.
At first, people thought the COVID-19 vaccines (疫苗) meant that the end of the pandemic (疫情) was near. However, new variants (变异毒株) Delta and Omicron pushed the world into a new battle (战役) against the virus.
The world has been troubled by some other problems, too. Political unrest (动荡的局面) in Afghanistan after US soldiers left, US demonstrators (示威者) against racial violence (种族暴力), floods and forest fires because of climate change. Every time we looked at the news, we felt worried.
Yet still, there were moments of hope. Sporting events made a successful comeback in 2021. The Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics brought people together. Countries and companies made big progress in space exploration. The Communist Party of China celebrated its 100th anniversary and children have more time for fun after China introduced the “double reduction” policy.
Whether changes were good or bad, we tried our best to deal with them. And we have every reason to believe that we can make better changes in 2022.

What will the world of tomorrow look like Many people today believe that technology is going to help solve some of the most difficult problems we have on Earth today. New technology may solve old problems, and it may also create new ones. No technology is perfect. Each has advantages (优点) and disadvantages (缺点), as these three examples.
When we dream about the future, many of us think that we will be able to fly to the skies in our own personal flying car. We could fly at 480 km per hour. The advantage of the personal flying cars is that they can avoid traffic lights and busy roads. However, if the cars become popular, there will be problems with traffic control.
3D printing is another new technology for the future. 3D printers are already used to make lifesize models of car parts, and man made body parts, such as ears. As we move into the future, 3D printing will change the way we make things and the way we treat sick people. The disadvantage is that such a machine is very expensive.
Finally, people are trying to build a robot suit (套装). This is an electronic suit. It allows people to lift heavy objects and walk a long way. It might help people walk again after an illness or an accident. However, one disadvantage at the moment is cost.
Looking ahead, it is easy to imagine a future. We will be able to fly to work, print out a new pair of shoes or lift a car above our heads. Although there are some problems to solve before all of these are possible, we can certainly dream of a world. In this world, technology makes people’s life easier and safer. It can solve some of the most difficult problems we have today.
