Tom lit the candle again, and made his way down one of the passages. While he was feeling around, his hand suddenly touched another hand. Tom jumped back, held out his candle far in front of him to see who was there. A face then appeared from down below. It was the face of Injun Joe!
Both of them screamed, and then Injun Joe turned and disappeared quickly into the darkness. Tom turned and made his way back to where Becky was sitting. Have you ever read the famous novel Robinson Crusoe (《鲁滨逊漂流记》) Do you know that it was based on a real life story of a Scottish sailor, Alexander Selkirk?
Selkirk was born in Scotland in 1676. As he grew up, he became a sailor (海员). One day, he was asked to fight around South America, while the ship was damaged by the Spanish. He was surprised that the ship would sink, so he tried to land on the next island. The island was Mas a Tierra and it is known as “Robinson Crusoe Island” today.
The island in the Pacific was far away, with nobody around, but Selkirk managed to live there alone for over 4 years. At first, he didn’t realize it would be more than 4 years. He mainly passed the time by reading his Bible (圣经). Though there was nobody else on the island, there were animals, including rats, cats and goats. The rats were such fierce animals that he had to use wild cats to protect himself during the night. During the days on the island, there were at least two ships coming close. Unluckily, they were not friendly and even opened fire on Selkirk, but he escaped successfully.
Finally, on the first of February 1709, when two British ships arrived at the island, Selkirk was rescued. Reading history books can let us learn from great people in history and live better. A history book that you can’t miss is Historical Records or Shiji.
Historical Records is the first general history of China. Sima Qian, an official (官员) during the Western Han Dynasty (206BC—AD24) wrote it. The 520,000-word work records the events beginning with the famous Yellow Emperor and ending with the first year of the Han Wudi period, covering around 3,000 years.
In this book, I really like how the writer describes different people. For example, there’s Da Yu, the founder of the Xia Dynasty. He tried so hard to stop a big flood (洪水) that he refused to enter his home while passing by three times. His selflessness (无私) really moved me. I also hope to be a great person like Da Yu.
There are also two farmers, Chen Sheng and Wu Guang. They stood up and led a group of people against the Qin Dynasty. Their story shows that every human, whatever their birth, can become something great if he tried his best.
When I read this book, I could see how Sima Qian made the characters come alive with his words. This makes the book full of strong feelings, and I love the stories.

James Trapp, a writer for the British Council, suggests that Sun Wukong, known to most Western readers 60 the Monkey King, is the reason for the novel’s lasting popularity. “In many ways, the Monkey King is the archetype of the folk hero, or in modern terms, the superhero,” Trapp wrote.
