(22-23八年级下·广东深圳·期中)Although foggy lenses (镜片) have been causing trouble for glasses wearers for as long as glasses have been invented, they happen more often to those wearing a mask (口罩). Researchers at a Swiss university may have finally come up with a way to solve the problem that works when someone’s wearing a mask, or when they’ve just come inside from the cold.
There’s no real mystery as to why glasses fog up. When warm moisture (湿气) in air, or from someone’s breath, hits a cold glasses lens, the moisture then changes into tiny water drops. It happens often in the winter, when people are coming in from the outside, and now all year round, with masks that don’t form a closed space around the wearer’s nose allowing warm air to go upwards as they breathe.
Fogging up is also a problem for car windows. The simple way is to heat the windows using hot air from the engine, but adding electric heaters to glasses, which are made to be lightweight and comfortable to wear, isn’t really possible. So, researchers found a special way to heat the lenses, that is, a new kind of glass coating (玻璃涂层).
The coating is made from a very thin layer of gold. The layer of gold takes in light from the sun, causing the glass to heat up by up to 89℃, stopping moisture in the air from changing into fog on it. But this method is not that perfect. As the gold draws the energy it needs to heat up from the sun, the coating won’t do much good in the evening.

(21-22八年级下·广东深圳·期中)Experts believe that there are more than 8 million restaurants in the world today. So it might surprise you to learn that restaurants have only existed(存在) for a few centuries. Before 1765, there were no restaurants. That is, here were no places that provided the restaurant experience. There was nowhere in which a waiter brought you food and drink that you picked from a menu. In fact, there were no menus(菜单) anywhere.
There were eating places travellers could go to centuries before that. The countryside was full of inns that would serve food. The rich could also eat special meals prepared by personal cooks. But none of them could be called a “restaurant”.
A man called Boulanger changed that. In 1765, he opened a place in Paris that sold soups(汤). On his sign he used the word “restaurant” to describe what he was selling. At that time, soups were considered something that could help “restore” (恢复) your health—in French the word “restore” is “restaurer”—he called the soups “restaurants”. More “restaurants” opened in France, and people began to buy soups more often.

(22-23八年级下·广东深圳·期中)①Looking at wind turbines(涡轮机), you might wonder, “Where does all the energy go ” You might think it’s used immediately, or stored away until needed. However, the reality might surprise you. Because of being short of long-term storage choices, most energy from wind farms is lost. In fact, during 2020, electricity that could have powered two million homes was wasted for this reason!
②Wind power depends heavily on the weather. This causes problems when the wind isn’t blowing. If the need for energy exceeds the supply of wind power, electricity may be cut off. Conversely, power may be wasted when it cannot be stored over the long term.
③Ocean Grazer, a Dutch company, is suggesting a new solution for this problem—an underwater storage system! Called the Ocean Battery, this system’s purpose is to collect and store electricity in an environmentally-friendly manner using a system of pumps(泵) and turbines.
④During low demand(需求), the electricity from wind farms will pump water from underground pools into expandable bladders(囊状物) on the seafloor. When power is needed, the water runs back down into the pools through a turbine, creating energy. This idea is similar to how hydroelectric(水力发电的) dams work.
⑤What changes will the Ocean Battery bring It can be used with solar farms, tidal energy farms, and any other off-shore electricity producers.
⑥This new solution can have a 70%~80% efficiency(效率) rate, and since it can run a countless number of cycles in its lifetime(around 20 years), it is cost-efficient and dependable. Its many-sided use as well as its high efficiency makes it a great way for energy storage! It can be used almost everywhere.
⑦An example for the Ocean Battery is already being tested in the Netherlands and several other areas. Underwater storage of electricity causes greater challenges compared to storage on land, and we may see newer and more helpful designs as technology continues to advance.
56.According to Paragraph 1, the underlined words “the reality” refer to the fact that ________.

And even then, the cat you want to adopt might be adopted by others by the time you can adopt him or her. In my case, a rescue worker adopted the cat ahead of me. But I’m glad that these cats can find good homes. And in the end, I did finally find a sweet baby cat of my own.

(21-22八年级下·广东深圳·期中)Have you ever heard the sound of a hummingbird They make a buzzing noise when they fly. They make this noise because they beat their wings so fast. They beat their wings up to 80 times a second. All that flapping makes a lot of noise. That’s why we call them hummingbirds.
Hummingbirds fly in a unique way. They move their wings so fast that they can hover. This means that they can stay in one spot in the middle of the air, like a helicopter. Sometimes they fly upside down. They are the only bird that flies backward.
Hummingbirds are small. One type called the bee hummingbird is the smallest bird in the world. Bee hummingbirds weigh less than a penny. They are just a little bit bigger than bees. I guess that’s why they get their name.
Hummingbirds move fast. It takes lots of energy to move as fast as they do. This means that they need to eat a lot of food. Their favorite food is nectar, a sweet liquid inside of some flowers. They drink more than their own weight of nectar daily. They have to visit hundreds of flowers to get enough nectar to live. They can only store enough energy to survive through the night. They live on the edge.
Hummingbirds help flowers too. They get pollen(花粉) on their heads and bills(鸟嘴) when they feed. Flowers use pollen to make seeds. Hummingbirds help pollen get from one flower to the next. This helps flowers make more seeds. More seeds mean more flowers. More flowers mean more food for hummingbirds. Isn’t it nice how that works out
