Song of Autumn Since olden days we feel in autumn sad and drear, But I say spring cannot compete with autumn clear. On a fine day a crane cleaves the clouds and soars high; It leads the poet's lofty mind to azure sky. —Translated by Xu Yuanchong
Poems from Tang and Song dynasties, operas from Yuan dynasty, and novels from Ming and Qing dynasties are very famous in China's history. Today, I'd like to recommend Song of Autumn, one of the poems by Liu Yuxi (772—842), a famous poet and writer in the mid-Tang dynasty.
Just as shown in the first line of the poem, most ancient poets liked to describe autumn as a very sad time, but in this poem the season appears differently. In Liu's eyes, autumn, full of life and hope, is even better than spring mornings. He describes the bright scene of a crane riding the clouds and flying into the blue sky.
With his poems paying special attention to expressing personal feelings, as well as the daily life of common people, Liu wrote poems with beautiful music-like words. You may feel it in this poem. Being translated thoughtfully by experienced Xu Yuanchong, the poem still reads not so beautifully as that in Chinese.
Here is another example, in Liu's essay An Eulogium on a Humble Cell (《陋室铭》), with less than 100 words, he shows a lively picture of his humble cell. However, it also shows how he was pleased with the poor and simple life. People may find it strange that one can feel happy living in such a humble cell. Learning from his famous sentence, "be fragrant because of my virtues" (斯是陋室,惟吾德馨), I think to be a respectable man is more important than to live in big houses, to wear beautiful clothes, to enjoy delicious food, and even to gain knowledge.
14.Which dynasty is the poem Song of Autumn written in

15.How was autumn in Liu Yuxi's eyes at that time

I live in New York city and my neighbours are people I don't know. My city, neighborhood and block are filled with people who don't know me, don't care to know me, and don't talk to me. I find that it's pretty hard to love people you don't even know. And sometimes, we all, myself included, use that as an excuse not to try. I read Brendan's story recently which has influenced my attitude (态度) toward the people around us.
One day, Brendan, a young man in New York was on the way back to his Brooklyn flat when a homeless woman called Erica asked him for money. He said that he had no money. By the end of the week, she asked two more times, and each time he answered"No". The woman looked upset, so Brendan said, "I am on my way to a job interview. If I get the job, I'll take you out for Chinese food."
Brendan got the job and carried out his promise. That was when their friendship began. They built a strong friendship by supporting each other and spending their birthdays, holidays and hard times together, over a period of eight years. When Brendan's heater broke, Erica made him a blanket. Two days later when he told her that he had lost his job, she disappeared, returning minutes later, bringing him food to eat. She continued to do that throughout the winter. Even with so little, she never hesitated (犹豫) to give back.
Over these years, Erica has moved from the streets and subway stations into a halfway house, and is now moving into a new flat. To celebrate it, Brendan wanted to do something special for Erica. He went with her to Walmart and helped her to pick out everything she would need for her new flat.
May (祝愿) Brendan's story help us to find a new way to honour, serve and love the people around us.

If you think English means endless new words, difficult grammar and sometimes strange pronunciation, you are wrong. Haven't you noticed that you have become smarter since you started to learn a language
According to a new study by a British university, learning a second language can lead to an increase in your brain power. Researchers found that learning other languages changes grey matter (灰质). This is the area of the brain which processes information. It is similar to the way that exercise builds muscles (肌肉).
The researchers also found the effect is greater on the younger people who learn a second language. A team led by Dr. Andrea Mechelli, from University College London, took a group of British who only spoke English. They were compared with a group of "early bilinguals(通两种语言的人)", who had learnt a second language before the age of five, as well as a number of later learners.
Scans showed that grey matter density (密度)in the brain was greater in bilinguals than in people without a second language. But the longer a person waited before mastering a new language, the smaller the difference was.
"Our findings suggest that the structure of the brain is changed by the experience of learning a second language," said the scientists. It means that the change itself increases the ability to learn.
Professor Dylan Vaughan Jones of the University of Wales has researched the link between bilingualism and maths skills. "Having two languages gives you two windows on the world and makes the brain more flexible (灵活的)," he said. " You are actually going beyond language and have a better understanding of different ideas."
The findings were matched in a study of native (本地的) Italian speakers who had learned English as a second language between the ages of 2 and 34.Reading, writing and comprehension were all tested. The results showed that the younger they started to learn, the better. "Studying a language means you get an entrance to another world, " explained the scientists.
22.The main subject of this passage is .
A. language learning and maths study
B. the problems of learning a second language
C. man's ability of learning a second language
D. the advantages of learning a second language
23.In Paragraph 2, the writer mentions "exercise" in order to .
A. show that language learning is a long process
B. suggest that language learning needs physical strength
C. prove that one needs more practice when learning a language
D. make people understand language learning helps grey matter work well
24.We may learn from the scientific findings that .
A. the ability to learn a second language is changing all the time
B. the earlier you start to learn a second language, the higher the grey matter density is
C. the experience of learning a second language has an unknown effect on people's brain
D. there is no difference between a second language learner and one knowing no second language
25.In the last two paragraphs, the writer tries to tell us that .
A. Italian is the best choice for you as a second language
B. learning a second language is the same as studying maths
C. early learning of a second language helps in studying other subjects
D. you must choose the ages between 2 and 34 to learn a second language

34. An idol is someone who we respect or love. However, unlike many of my classmates, my idol is not a film star, a famous writer or a sportsman. He is neither a world leader nor an important person from history. My idol is my dad.
Most people believe that a man should go out and work. However, when I was only a five-year-old boy, I was seriously ill and needed attention all the time. My mother and father both worked and my grandparents lived far away. This was a big problem. My dad knew how much my mum loved her job, so he stopped working to stay at home and look after me. Many men in this situation would want their wives to stay with the child, but my dad always thinks about others before himself. This made me start to respect him.
My dad later took a job and worked at night. He chose the job so that he would only be out of the house when I was sleeping. Since then, my dad has helped and supported me in everything I do. I remember when I was learning to ride a bike, my dad ran behind me and held the back of the bicycle so that I would not fall. I felt so safe because I knew he was near. I did not notice when he stopped holding me. Soon, I was able to ride by myself.
My family is not rich, and we do not own a big house or an expensive car. My dad has showed me that something is more important than money. Now he works hard every day and is often very busy, but he always makes time to stay with me. He helps me with my homework, and plays games with me at weekends. He has also taught me we do not need money to make ourselves happy. We make and fly our own kites, go for walks in the countryside, and even cook together. He has taught me that I can achieve anything if I really work hard on it.

Being prepared is important. I've learned it through my experience in the spelling competition last year. Never a straight A student, I was worried that I couldn't bear the hard work needed in the first place. However, I devoted myself to the preparation, working on the difficult words. My vocabulary improved day by day. ①When the competition began, I was calm and confident. Words flowed naturally out of my lips. I won the competition, which was something I could never even dreamed of before.
The benefits of the experience are not only about honor and pride. More importantly, I've learned to break free from the negative thoughts and self-doubt deep inside. ②I've also realized that being prepared works miracles. All we have to do is to get fully prepared for whatever challenges that come along.
