Living in a foreign culture can be exciting, but it can also be confusing (令人迷惑的). A group of Americans who taught English in other countries recently discussed their experiences. They decided that miscommunications were always possible.
On her first day in Micronesia, an island in the Pacific, Lisa thought people weren t paying any attention to her. The day was hot. She went into a store and asked for cold drinks. The local woman didn t say anything. Lisa repeated the question. Still the woman said nothing. She later learned that the woman had answered her: She had raised her eyebrows, which in Micronesia means “yes”.
Jan remembered an experience she had in Bulgaria, a country in Europe. She went to a restaurant that was known for its cabbage. She asked the waiter, “Do you have cabbage today ” the waiter nodded his head. Jan waited, but the cabbage never came. In that country, a nod means no.
Tom had a similar problem when he arrived in India. After explaining something in class, he asked his students if they understood. They answered with many different nods and shakes of the head. He thought some people had not understood, so he explained again. When he asked again, they did the same thing. He soon found out that his students did understand. In India, people nod and shake their heads in different ways depending on where they come from. You have to know where a person is from to understand whether they mean “yes” or “no”.

C. should often discuss their experiences

China has long been known as a nation of rites(礼仪之邦).Chinese people behave politely on any formal occasion, whether it is a wedding ceremony,a celebration party,or a banquet(宴席).
As they say, when in Rome, do as the Romans do. The following basic Chinese table manners will help you generally master Chinese dinner manners.
One clear difference between Western and Eastern dining habits is portion (一份) size. While meals in Western restaurants are sized for individuals (个人),dishes offered in Chinese restaurants are meant to be shared. As such, food either comes in bite﹣sized pieces,or is prepared in a way that makes it easy to portion(分配) while being served to you on large plates.
As meals are shared, one may care about the degree of sanitation (公共卫生).It s common to find communal chopsticks(公筷) placed with each dish. It is good manners to use the communal utensils in a public setting.
You may also notice that tables, especially those in larger dining rooms, are round and have a lazy Susan (more commonly known as "that rotating (旋转的) table on top of your table").Besides efficiency(效率)purposes, circular tables stand for important meaning in Chinese culture. It means unity (团结) and presents dining as an event where family members get together. Before you spin the turntable to get to that delicious piece of duck, make sure that no one else is reaching for food! It s impolite to spin the table just as someone is trying to pick up some food.
As mentioned above,Chinese restaurants often use round tables. In Western cultures, the host or the eldest family member often sits at the head of a long table. But what happens when the table is round?
As a round table, the seat of honor(首位) is the one facing the door. The closer you are sitting next to that seat, the more important you are. In a setting where there is no doorway—outdoor dining, for example﹣the seat of honor would be the one facing east. In a banquet environment, the table of honor is usually the one sitting farthest away from the door.
The time at which the dining begins depends on the presence of party members. The suitable time to dig in is after the guest of honor,or the eldest member of the group,is seated and has begun their meal. Sometimes they will mean the start of a meal,by saying"吃吧"which means “Please eat .
33.What should we do if we have meals in a public setting?
A. Bring your own chopsticks from home.
B. Use communal chopsticks to get food.
C. Use your own chopsticks to share food.
D. Share the food with others chopsticks.
34.What does the underlined word "spin" in the passage mean?
A. turn something around B. pull something nearer
C. pick something up D. move something away
35.What is the mainly idea of Paragraph 5?
A. Why the table is round? B. How can you find a seat?
C. Which is the honor seat? D. Who is the most important?
36.How does the writer organize the article?
A. In time order.
B. From specific(细节) to general(整体).
C. In space order.
D. From general to specific.

It was last January, when I d just finished a charity and was on the train back home, that I put down my phone and started writing thank-you notes to people who had helped.
When I got off the train, I felt amazingly good. The next day, I wrote more thank-yous and the same feeling of happiness hit me again. I suddenly had the idea: Why not keep on doing this for every day of the year
To keep on task, I decided to pick out a different theme for each month. January was charity. February would be neighbors, I decided. And I thought of a number of names right away: the owner of our local bookstore, who let me and my little son in before the store opened and offered to play his favorite songs; our babysitter, who dropped off a bag of old board games for our kids to play...
While writing the notes, I realized how often I had spent my time on the phone moving from app to app appreciating(欣赏) other people s lives. Writing thank-you notes allowed me the time to do something different, paying more attention to my own life.
In the following months, I wrote to my friends, doctors, teachers and parenting role models. In July, my “food” month, I wrote to Julie, who used to cook at my favorite restaurant. It went like this:
Dear Julie,
I ve been finding myself missing you lately. Thank you for hosting and cooking beautiful and thoughtful food. Jake and I will never forget when you sent out biscuits shaped into the number VI for our sixth anniversary(周年纪念日). We talk about it every year.
Thank you. We miss you.
Love,
Gina
I was happy to receive a note back from her. Julie replied, “I don t think I ve ever received such a touching letter before, I m going through a hard time right now, and this helps.”
On December 31, I wrote my last card — to Jake, my husband, and our two kids. And I took a picture of us, so I could remember the feeling welling up inside me. Gratitude.
37.The underlined word “this” in Paragraph 2 means ________.
A. writing thank-you notes B. putting the phone away
C. taking the train back home D. raising money for charity
38.How did Julie most probably feel after reading the note from Gina?
A. Shy and surprised. B. Pleased and relaxed.
C. Nervous and excited. D. Moved and encouraged.
39.What did Gina get by doing her task according to the passage?
A. Many thanks from her neighbors.
B. More time to appreciate her own life.
C. More help from people around her.
D. Happy moments to be with her friends.
40.The best title for the passage can be ________.
A. My Thank You Year B. An Amazing Trip
C. Happiness inside Us D. Important People in Our Life

41.Can you imagine a world without chocolate According to chocolate makers it could happen if we don t act soon.
There are two main causes of the chocolate shortage (短缺)—chocolate s growing popularity and less production of cocoa, the plant from which chocolate is made. With more and more people in India and China loving chocolate these years, not much can be done about the first cause.
Therefore, the only thing we can do is to increase cocoa production. However, new plant diseases and little rain have reduced cocoa production by 40 percent in the past 10 years. What s worse, many cocoa farmers in Africa and other cocoa-producing countries are changing to other crops such as corn or rubber. This way, the farmers can make more money.
“To prevent more farmers from changing, we are trying to create new cocoa plants that can grow faster and stronger.” said the researchers at the International Cocoa Control Centre. But first they must make sure the new plants are safe to grow. This takes a long time.
First, each new plant is stored at the Control Centre for six months to make sure it is healthy. It is then planted in the Centre s fields, studied and tested for another two years. Only after scientists are certain that they re disease-free, will the plants be sent to farmers in West Africa or wherever else they are needed.
To create new stronger types of cocoa, scientists at the Centre are combining the best parts from different cocoa plants. Though the world is facing a serious chocolate shortage, there is now hope!
