On a summer day, a man was sitting under a tree on the bank of a river, watching a group of ducks on the river.
Soon a branch with leaves came drifting (漂浮) among them, and they all flew away. After circling in the air for a little time, they landed again on their feeding ground.
Soon another branch came drifting down among them, and again they took flight from the river. But when they found the branch drifted by without any danger, they flew down to the water as before.
After four or five branches had drifted by in this way, the ducks gave little attention to them. At last, they hardly tried to fly out of their way, even when the branches nearly touched them.
The man who was watching all this, now wanted to know who drifted these branches. He looked up the river, and noticed a fox slyly (偷偷地) watching the ducks. “What will he do next ” thought the man.
When the fox saw that the ducks were no longer afraid of the branches, he took a much larger branch, and hid himself behind it. Then he drifted himself with the larger branch. When he was right among the ducks, he caught two young ducks quickly and swam off with them. The rest of the ducks flew away in fright, and did not come back for a long time.

Have you ever seen firefighters (消防员) put out the fire when a fire broke out in the forest Now I’ll tell you something about smokejumpers (空降森林消防员) and let you know more about it.
Smokejumpers are special firefighters. They jump from planes into areas that are difficult to reach by car or on foot, like the middle of a mountain forest. They race to put out fires as fast as they can.
At the scene of the fire, smokejumpers first check the land and decide how to fight the fire. They try their best to stop a fire from spreading (蔓延). Using their tools, smokejumpers clear the land of flammable things like dry grass and leaves (叶子). They usually carry some water with them.
In the USA, although most smokejumpers are men, more women are joining. The important thing is that their height and weight must be within a certain range (范围). For example, smokejumpers in the USA must be between 120 and 200 pounds, so they don’t get hurt when they land, or get blown by strong winds.
Smokejumpers must also be able to live in the wilderness. In Russia, many smokejumpers know how to find food in the forest and make simple tools.
The work is dangerous, and the hours are long. But for smokejumpers, smokejumping isn’t just a job. They love being able to jump out of planes, fight fires, and live in the forest. As a 28-year-old Russian smokejumper, Alexi Tishin says, “This is the best job for brave people.”

A.He loves his job. B.He is American.

I went to the volunteer work orientation (培训) at Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital in California several days ago.
Before I went there, I thought it was just a meeting for us to learn some information on how to do volunteer work. To my surprise, this meeting lasted for four hours! It told us many things about how to be a good volunteer at hospital.
For example, Shannon C. Graham, the director, told us to keep eye contact while offering help and never wait to be asked but offer help first. She also told us to bend down (弯腰) to listen while patients are talking to show that we’re willing to hear. We should lead them to ask others for help and never say “It is not my business” if we can’t answer their questions.
For the whole meeting, Miss Graham taught us how to satisfy patients through our words, body language and manners. It impressed (使……印象深刻) me a lot. Americans pay so much attention to serving people with a professional attitude (专业的态度).
I suddenly realized why many people feel foreigners are really nice and friendly. They have been trained to do so since they were young. They always ask themselves: How do people feel toward my service How can I improve to let them feel better I really like this kind of culture.

Alice was not hurt, so she jumped to her feet in a moment. She looked up, and found the White Rabbit was still in sight. She was close behind it when she turned the corner, but the Rabbit was no longer to be seen. She found herself in a long, low hall.
There were doors all around the hall, but they were all locked.
Alice walked sadly down the middle, wondering how she was ever to get out again.
Suddenly, she came upon a little three-legged table. There was nothing on it but a tiny golden key, and Alice’s first idea was that this might belong to one of the doors of the hall.
But, alas! Either the locks were too large, or the key was too small. However, on the second time round, she came upon a low curtain she had not noticed before and behind it was a little door. She tried the little golden key in the lock, and she was pleased to find it fitted!

In the morning, we went camping along a path in Green Natural Park. We were happy because it was a sunny day. We were expecting an enjoyable two-day holiday. On the way, we kept singing and making jokes.
However, in the afternoon, when we finished our picnic at one o’clock, it was dark and windy. Soon, there was a shower. Unluckily, none of us brought an umbrella. We ran about but we could find no shelter.
Twenty minutes passed and it was still raining. There were hours to go before we reached the campsite (野营地). It was even worse that our small compass (指南针) showed that we went in the wrong direction. We had lost our way!
We had to make a quick decision as it was raining heavily. Chris said we could set up a tent to shelter us from the rain, so Mary and Tom helped to set up the tent. Chris and I tried to make a fire to keep us warm. But we were unable to light the fire, as everything was wet. We finally succeeded though. We dried ourselves, chatted and waited inside the tent. At about five o’clock, it stopped raining. We decided to give up the camping trip because all of us had been very tired.
This camping trip may not be very successful but we know each other better. And the most important thing I’ve learned from this trip is the importance of team spirit.

Winter is hard for most animals. So some birds and animals fly to the south.
The groundhog (土拨鼠), however, deals with winter differently. As soon as it feels the weather turning cold, it starts to dig a hole at least five feet underground. There it makes a comfortable home with leaves and grass. It spends the cold winter months in its underground bed and it won’t wake up until spring.
The groundhog doesn’t eat at all during the winter. Instead, it eats as much and as often as it can during the summer. As winter comes, the groundhog becomes so fat that it can hardly move. When it starts to feel sleepy, it goes back to the home and falls into a deep sleep. Its breathing almost stops, its heart slows to about four beats a minute and its body temperature falls to just above 0℃ during the sleep. When it wakes up in spring, its weight (重量) is only half of what it was in the fall. By February or March, it’s ready to leave its hole.
So years ago, when science and technology was less developed, people often waited for the first groundhog to stick its head out above ground as it showed that spring was coming. This gave rise to a number of stories. One of them is about a groundhog called Phil. This animal could forecast (预测) the weather. Phil stuck his head out above ground and looked around every February 2nd. If he saw his shadow (影子), it meant that there would be an extended (延长的) winter of six weeks. If the weather was cloudy and he didn’t see his shadow, it meant spring would be early.
66.What can we know about the groundhog’s home during the winter
A.It’s usually in trees. B.There are leaves and grass in it.
C.Its bed is five feet long. D.The groundhog digs it in summer.
67.What change will happen to the groundhog when sleeping in winter
A.It breathes more quickly. B.Its body temperature goes up.
C.It becomes much thinner. D.Its heart beats faster and faster.

A.It was easier for them to catch it. B.There was much food in its home.
C.It would bring good luck to see a groundhog. D.It was a sign that the winter was over.
69.Which of the following is the right order according to the text
①The groundhog hibernates (冬眠).
②The groundhog leaves its hole next year.
③The groundhog digs a hole as its home.
④The groundhog eats as much and as often as it can in the summer.
A.①③④② B.③①②④ C.④③①② D.③④①②

Welcome to the most friendly museum in London. In most museums, there’s no shouting and no running, and you must not touch anything. 76 It is noisy! People talk about what they can see and do here, and there are some very noisy machines, too. If you want answers to all your questions about science, this is the right place for you.
I like to visit the rooms on the second and third floors. You can learn about communications and the environment as well as math, physics (物理学) and chemistry (化学). For example, you can find out how people dig coal (煤) from the ground and use it to create energy. 77
