W: I know. But you should send them an email or a note thanking them for the interview. It’ll make you stand out from the crowd and seem really professional.
M: It sounds good but I don’t want to sound desperate, as if I’m begging for the job.
W: Of course not. You’re not going to go over the top, just a brief note, telling them that you appreciate their time and that you’re serious about the job. I think they’ll be greatly impressed.

Text 10
W: Good afternoon, everyone. Welcome to the first lecture of our new course in Positive Psychology. While some people may associate psychology with looking at what’s wrong with us, and at what problems we have, there is much more to psychology than that. Positive Psychology, for example, looks at how to help people become happier.
This lecture begins with a question: what makes a happy life According to Csikszentmihalyi, a famous psychologist of the theory of flow, happiness is not caused by external events or things that happen to us. If we want happiness, we have to actively look for it. He believed that our happiest moments happen when we are totally focused on what we are doing. Csikszentmihalyi got the inspiration for his theory of flow when he noticed how artists worked in a studio. They completely lost track of time, they didn’t notice they were hungry or tired, and they could work for hours without stopping. The best way to explain it is that it is like being in a river and the flow of the water carries you away.
For the rest of this lecture, I will explore this theory of flow in more detail.
Right, let’s get started.

The “Got Talent” crew is one of the pioneers in finding and publicizing music talent and has been giving the world some of its most favorite artists for almost two decades. In 2023, “Britain’s Got Talent” (BGT) uncovered a musical genius named Malakai Bayoh who impressed the audience with perfect high-note singing.
The London-based 13-year-old boy appeared for the show’s audition (海选) in April, 2023 and was accompanied by his mom and sister. “My big dream is to be an opera singer. I started singing at 7,” said Malakai to the BGT team. He then added jokingly, “My mom made me join the choir because she’s very bossy.” The teenager mentioned she was his biggest fan.
Malakai’s mom was worried as he was about to perform and said, “It scares me because, on his first show, somebody heckled (对……起哄) him. It was sad to see someone boo a child on stage because it might destroy his confidence completely.” Contrary to his mom’s fear, Malakai set the stage on fire singing a beautiful song and the entire crowd was impressed by his amazing voice. As he ended his song, the audience and the judges gave him a big round of applause. The performance won him Simon Cowell’s Golden Buzzer, sending him straight to the semi-finals of the show.
The other judges called Malakai’s performance “perfect” and “heavenly”. His angelic voice blew the audience away and the judges thanked the teen for coming to the show. Malakai went on to become one of the finalists of the show and signed a record deal with Universal Music.
Malakai’ s audition at the BGT went viral on social media, “I’m a trained singer, and a music teacher by profession, and sang this song as a young performer myself. I can say with absolute certainty this is the best I’ve ever heard this song sung, with proper technique and proper breathing. This boy is a gifted singer,” @mayacorinne878 posted.

It’s no secret that sleep is important to your overall health, but a lack of sleep could have great effects on your heart, a new study shows. The researchers said people with insomnia(失眠症)are more likely to have a heart attack.
Insomnia is the most common sleep disorder in the US, the researchers wrote in their report, noting that 10% to 15% of people in the US struggle with it. The meta-analysis of previously published research suggests that the potential association between insomnia and heart attack risk is strongest in women.
Dr. Martha Gulati, director of prevention at the Cedars-Sinai Smidt Heart Institute, said that most of her patients are women and that insomnia is a noted risk factor for women who have had any form of ischemic heart disease. “We see it probably in 1 in 10 patients in the United States,” said Gulati, who was not involved in the new research. “It is my impression that almost everyone experiences insomnia at some point in their life. The estimate is that 1 in 2 adults experience it at some point in their life, maybe in the short term because of stressful moments.”
For their analysis, the researchers defined insomnia as a sleep disorder with three main symptoms(症状): Difficulty falling asleep, difficulty staying asleep and waking early and being unable to fall back asleep.
The study also found an association between increased heart attack risk and how long a participant slept each night. Those who slept five hours or less had the highest association with heart attack risk and were 1.56 times more likely to have a heart attack than people who slept seven or eight hours. Longer sleep duration wasn’t always more protective. The study found that people who slept six hours a night had a lower risk of a heart attack than those who slept nine hours or more. “A lot of studies have pointed somewhere between seven and eight hours of sleep being the magic number for us,” another researcher said. “There is obviously variability for everyone, but too much sleep is rarely the issue.”
28.What’s the function of the first paragraph
A.To list a significant fact. B.To warn the readers seriously.
C.To introduce the topic. D.To draw the readers’ interest.
29.What can we infer from Gulati words
A.Insomnia is unavoidable in the short term.
B.Insomnia is a common phenomenon in life.
C.Heart attack often happens during insomnia.
D.Women are less experienced in dealing with insomnia.
30.What inspiration can we get according to the sleeping time
A.Hope for the best, but prepare for the worst. B.Too much is as bad as too little.
C.Bite off more than one can chew. D.Put quality before quantity.
31.What’s the author’s attitude to the relationship between insomnia and heart attack
A.Objective B.Indifferent. C.Positive. D.Pessimistic.
28.C 29.B 30.D 31.A
根据第一段“It’s no secret that sleep is important to your overall health, but a lack of sleep could have great effects on your heart, a new study shows. The researchers said people with insomnia are more likely to have a heart attack.(众所周知,睡眠对你的整体健康很重要,但一项新研究显示,睡眠不足可能对你的心脏有很大影响。研究人员说,失眠症更容易患心脏病)”可知,本段主要介绍了一项新的研究,即,睡眠不足可能对你的心脏有很大影响,故第一段的作用是引出文章的主题:睡眠不足对心脏健康的影响。故选C。
29.推理判断题。根据第三段中““We see it probably in 1 in 10 patients in the United States,” said Gulati, who was not involved in the new research. “It is my impression that almost everyone experiences insomnia at some point in their life. The estimate is that 1 in 2 adults experience it at some point in their life, maybe in the short term because of stressful moments.”(Gulati说:“在美国,我们发现每10名患者中就有1人患有这种疾病。” Gulati没有参与这项新研究。“在我的印象中,几乎每个人都在人生的某个阶段经历过失眠。据估计,每两个成年人中就有一个在他们生命中的某个时刻经历过这种情况,也许是短期的,因为压力大。”)”可知,从Gulati看来,失眠是生活中的常见现象,因为几乎每个人都在人生的某个阶段经历过失眠。故选B。
30.细节理解题。根据文章最后一段可知“Those who slept five hours or less had the highest association with heart attack risk and were 1.56 times more likely to have a heart attack than people who slept seven or eight hours. Longer sleep duration wasn’t always more protective. The study found that people who slept six hours a night had a lower risk of a heart attack than those who slept nine hours or more. “A lot of studies have pointed somewhere between seven and eight hours of sleep being the magic number for us,” another researcher said. “There is obviously variability for everyone, but too much sleep is rarely the issue.”(睡5小时或更少的人患心脏病的风险最高,比睡7或8小时的人患心脏病的可能性高1.56倍。 故选A。
根据文章最后一段可知“Those who slept five hours or less had the highest association with heart attack risk and were 1.56 times more likely to have a heart attack than people who slept seven or eight hours. Longer sleep duration wasn’t always more protective. The study found that people who slept six hours a night had a lower risk of a heart attack than those who slept nine hours or more.

Ever wonder how this season’s celebrations affect the environment Guest blogger Krista Fairles takes an amusing look at this very topic.
The holidays are a wonderful, cheerful time when most people wait for Santa to bring them presents. But I’m not like most people. I spend my time wondering just what the environmental impacts of Santa Claus and his reindeer are, and more importantly, how I can calculate those impacts.
Lately I’ve been particularly curious as to whether Santa’s old sled is a clean green flying machine, or if he should be replacing his 8 reindeer with an environmentally-friendly car.
I should mention that, surprisingly, I was unable to find statistics specific to Santa’s magical flying reindeer, so these calculations use numbers from various sources and may not represent actual pollution caused by Santa and his animals. In other words, don’t complain to the government about the damage Santa is causing the environment based on this article.
Santa’s yearly trip around the globe is 44,000km long, twice the average of a North American driver. If we assume that the magic provides the altitude for this trip, then reindeer power only needs to push Santa’s sled forward. To complete the trip in 12 hours, I estimate they must travel at a speed of about 3100 km/h. To travel at this speed, for this length of time, the reindeer need to eat an incredible 980 million calories each!
So the next question is: how much food is in 980 million calories Well, if they’re eating corn, they’d need to eat 16, 500 lbs each-or 1.6 acres of food. Growing 12.8 acres of corn has its own implications for the environment that we’ll leave for another calculation.
We now need to consider that during the global trip the reindeer are “letting out” some of that corn in the form of methane. A resting cow produces 110 kg of methane per year, so flying reindeer would each let out about 4.8 tons. With methane causing 20 times the global warming damage of CO2, and the altitude increasing that damage by 1000% that another 20 times, we can put Santa’s round-trip emissions at 15,488 tons. This is much more than the 100 tons an environmentally-friendly car would release on the same trip!
Bad Santa.
32. According to Paragraph 6, how many acres of corn would Santa need to feed 10 reindeer
A. 1.6. B. 16. C. 12.8. D. 128.
33. Which of the following statements would the writer most probably agree with
A. Christmas celebrations are really a waste of money.
B. Vegetarians are more likely to survive than meat-eaters.
C. Raising animals has a negative influence on environment.
D. The car industry does less harm to environment than farming.
34. Which of the following words best describes the language style of the passage
A. Serious and uncritical. B. Cheerful and friendly.
C. Academic and formal. D. Humorous and concerned.
35. Which of the following is the best title for this passage
A. Is Santa driving clean and green
B. Santa, watch where you’re going!
C. Santa Claus is coming to town!
D. Let’s reduce waste on Christmas celebrations!

根据第六段的“Well, if they’re eating corn, they’d need to eat 16, 500 lbs each-or 1.6 acres of food.(好吧,如果它们吃玉米,每头驯鹿需要吃16,500磅——或1.6英亩的食物)”可知,每头驯鹿需要吃1.6英亩的玉米。
根据最后一段“We now need to consider that during the global trip the reindeer are “letting out” some of that corn in the form of methane. This is much more than the 100 tons an environmentally-friendly car would release on the same trip!(我们现在需要考虑的是,在全球旅行中,驯鹿以甲烷的形式“释放”了一些玉米。
作者在第二至四段中用了幽默的语言指出了圣诞老人乘坐驯鹿派发圣诞礼物会对环境造成破坏,而根据第五段中“To travel at this speed, for this length of time, the reindeer need to eat an incredible 980 million calories each! (要以这样的速度,在这么长的时间里,每只驯鹿需要吃下令人难以置信的9.8亿卡路里!)”,以及第七段中“A resting cow produces 110 kg of methane per year, so flying reindeer would each let out about 4.8 tons With methane causing 20 times the global warming damage of CO2.(一头休息的牛每年会产生110公斤的甲烷,那么每头会飞的驯鹿每年会释放大约4.8吨甲烷。甲烷对全球变暖造成的危害是二氧化碳的20倍)”列举的数字可以看出作者对此感到担忧,即这篇文章的语言风格是幽默且担忧的。故选D。

Artificial Intelligence (AI) geolocation (互联网定位技术) solutions are changing the way researchers track and monitor wildlife, enabling more powerful conservation efforts. These systems use advanced sensors, satellite imagery, and machine learning algorithms (算法) to gather real-time data on animal movements, habitat preferences, and migration patterns. 36
Traditional tracking methods often rely on non-automatic tracking or inconvenient necklace-like systems, which may cause stress and discomfort to the animals. 37 The devices can work as tags and the camera traps can be set up remotely, which decreases human impact on wildlife.
In addition, AI-powered devices collect and analyze data precisely. Through their assistance, scientists can gain insights into habitat choices and evaluate the effect of global warming on wild animal locations. 38 For example, by analyzing the collected data, conservationists can promote targeted habitat restoration efforts according to the patterns and connections they discovered with the help of AI geolocation devices.
39 By monitoring animals’ behavioral changes in real-time, researchers can quickly detect signs of environmental issues. Sudden changes in an animal’s movements could indicate threats or problems. Researchers can then respond immediately, potentially saving the animal’s life.
Sharing geolocation data through online platforms can also help raise awareness about protecting endangered species. 40 This help them feel more connected to the issues wildlife face in habitats. The bond promotes a sense of responsibility among individuals and encourages them to contribute to wildlife conservation efforts through various means, such as donations, volunteer work, and so on.
A. This knowledge enables them to make accurate and efficient decisions.
B. However, AI tracking does not require disturbing contact with the animals.
C. AI monitoring needs fewer battery replacements than the traditional methods.
D. The solutions have offered the following key benefits to wildlife conservation.
E. Directly engaging with conservation efforts gives people a first-hand experience.
F. The AI geolocation technology significantly reduces the need for massive fieldwork.
G. With real-time data, the AI solutions also function as an early warning for wildlife risks.

A Gift Beyond Measure
At an early age, I was crazy about music, dreaming of possessing a piano on which I could practice and play in the way a famous pianist did on the stage. Later when I was getting older, on my way to school, there was an instrument shop that I passed by almost every day. When I saw through the window, in the corner of the shop stood a nice piano which would always attract my eyes so deeply that I even forgot everything around me.
To my sadness, my family was truly struggling. In that period, my mother was laid off from her position and my father was only a clerk in a company. It was just a matter of getting by on a low income, not to mention buying me an expensive piano though they knew I was eager to play that piano so much. The increasing wrinkles in my father’s face even stopped me from having this thought.
Then one day after school, I went as usual to the shop window to look at the piano. However, the piano had gone! It was a big surprise. Someone had purchased the piano that I would stare at almost every day! I should not have been surprised as others had the right to buy it, if they could afford to. However, at the thought of not being able to see that piano any more, tears filled my eyes.
Disappointed and helpless, I wandered aimlessly up and down the street. I felt as though something had been stolen in my heart. After what seemed a year, I returned home, dragging my heavy legs. Hardly had I just gone into the house when my mother called my name. Brushing away my tears, I followed the sound of her voice into the dining-room.

I couldn’t imagine what was happening in front of me. Standing there in the room was the very piano I had been longing for day and night. With excitement and surprise in my heart, I couldn’t stop tears streaming down my face. My mother came over to me, saying they knew the piano was what I had dreamed about and my father had tried everything possible to make my dream come true. I was about to say something when there was a sound of footsteps.
Then the door opened and my father appeared, with a big smile on his wrinkled face. I gave him a big hug. “It’s so nice of you, Dad!” I said. I could not imagine how much effort he had made and how hard he was working every day. Maybe only the wrinkles on his face could tell me everything. My father kissed me on the forehead, whispering that he had earned enough to buy the piano at last. Only then did I realize that no gift could measure up to a father’s love.

28. What’s the function of the first paragraph
A. To list a significant fact. B. To warn the readers seriously.
C. To introduce the topic. D. To draw the readers’ interest.
29. What can we infer from Gulati words
A. Insomnia is unavoidable in the short term.
B. Insomnia is a common phenomenon in life.
C. Heart attack often happens during insomnia.
D. Women are less experienced in dealing with insomnia.
30. What inspiration can we get according to the sleeping time
A. Hope for the best, but prepare for the worst. B. Too much is as bad as too little.
C. Bite off more than one can chew. D. Put quality before quantity.
31. What’s the author’s attitude to the relationship between insomnia and heart attack
A. Objective B. Indifferent. C. Positive. D. Pessimistic..

A. Is Santa driving clean and green B. Santa, watch where you’re going!
C. Santa Claus is coming to town! D. Let’s reduce waste on Christmas celebrations!
