Mickey, Minnie, Donald
Duck, Pinocchio, and more Disney characters all have something in common —
gloves. Although there are many surprising facts about Disney's characters,
putting gloves on them is actually a reasonable move.
The short answer as to
why so many characters wear gloves is that animation (动画制作) is a difficult process. It takes time and efforts to create the
characters you know and love. Animators wanted to make their job easier and
faster with a few techniques. One of these techniques was using round edges (边) instead of angles. So this also meant making some parts simple,
such as hands, to make the animation process quicker.
Still, in the age of
black-and-white cartoons, separating characters' round-edged hands from their
black bodies was hard. Gloves were an easy way to make their hands stand out.
In fact, Walt Disney might have been the first to put gloves on his characters.
Once animation moved away from black and white, Mickey and his friends kept
their white gloves.
Besides keeping the
animation simple, Walt Disney told his biographer, Bob Thomas, that the gloves
existed for another reason: to make the mouse more like a human. "We
didn't want him to have mouse hands because he was supposed to be more human,"
Disney told Thomas in 1957. "So we gave him gloves. Five fingers seemed
like too much on such a little figure, so we took away one. That was just one
less finger to animate. " All this Disney's talk makes us want to go back
and look at photos of Mickey Mouse.
10.Why were round edges used in animation
A.They looked more beautiful.
B.They could be copied more easily.
C.They could make the creating job easier.
D.They were more popular with children.
11.What can we know about Mickey Mouse
A.It is like a human with five fingers.
B.Its hands are different from humans'.
C.Gloves help it stand out among all characters.
D.It wore gloves in the past but it doesn't nowadays.
12.What does the Disney's talk make people do
A.Enjoy Mickey's beauty. B.Count Mickey's fingers.
C.Recall our childhood. D.Check Mickey's gloves' color.
13.What does the text mainly talk about
A.How Disney created his characters.
B.What difference Disney characters have.
C.What makes Disney characters so popular.
D.Why Disney characters wear white gloves.
【答案】10.C
11.B
12.B
13.D
根据第二段中的“One of these techniques was using round edges(边)instead of angles. So this also meant making some parts simple, such as hands, to make the animation process quicker.”
根据最后一段中的 “Five fingers seemed like too much on such a little figure, so we took away one. That was just one less finger to animate”对于这么小的身材,五根手指似乎太多了,所以我们拿走了一根。
根据最后一段中的“All this Disney's talk makes us want to go back and look at photos of Mickey Mouse.”
根据第一段“Mickey, Minnie, Donald Duck, Pinocchio, and more Disney characters all have something in common — gloves. Although there are many surprising facts about Disney's characters, putting gloves on them is actually a reasonable move.”

Some libraries use unique architecture to encourage visitors to explore the bookshelves and settle down with a new book, or use roving libraries to bring books to hard-to-reach populations. No matter how they achieve it, these novel libraries are keeping the magic of reading alive.
Bishan Library (Singapore)
Built in 2006, this library with skylights and trellises, is meant to invoke a modern glass treehouse. Glass pods of varying colors stick out of the building randomly to create cozy yet airy corners for reading throughout the building. At the same time, a more open-plan children's room on the basement level invites interaction while preventing noise from filtering upward and disturbing those concentrating in the lofty perches above.
Stuttgart City Library (Stuttgart, Germany)
Opened in 2011, this nine-story public library is characterized by its attractive white color scheme (lit by blue light at night), its bold cubic shape. This cultural center for the city, designed to feel open and full of light, can be entered from any of its four sides, and people can borrow artwork as well as books.
The Camel Library Service (North Eastern Province, Kenya)
To combat low literacy rates in the desert of Kenya, the government created a roaming library composed of nine camels bringing books to villages. The library travels four days a week serving the region's nomadic people. With more funding, they plan to increase their reach both in distance and the books they carry.
Macquarie University Library (Sydney, Australia)
A wonderful combination of cutting-edge and sustainable ideas, this building was made from recycled materials, features a green roof, and was designed to look like the shape of a eucalyptus tree. It is also state of the art, using robot cranes to bring requested books to the front desk.
