It can be a real struggle to try to learn a new language. I had always enjoyed learning languages in school, but only recently did I start learning German. I found that I could understand and learn individual words easily, but when it came to literature, I really struggled. That was when my tutor at university suggested reading some children's books printed in the target language(目标语言).
At first, I felt it a bit silly to go on a hunt for a book designed for someone half my age, but then I realized that everyone has to start somewhere. As children, we were given these basic texts to familiarize our brains with certain vocabulary and writing structures, and from there, we could learn and develop. I started with books which are taught to children in the UK. I managed to find Oliver Twist by Charles Dickens and James and the Giant Peach by Roald Dahl.
The beauty of reading books that were introduced to you as a child is that you are already familiar with the plot. As a result, you can work out some of the definitions of words with your prior knowledge of the story. At first, I used to read with the book in one hand and a dictionary in the other, but this method did not work well for me. The method I would recommend is to read a chapter of your chosen children's book and at the end of that chapter, highlight the words you do not know and then look up the definitions. If you can wait a bit before you use a dictionary, you may be surprised what you can get merely from the context of the sentence in the story. Additionally, a lot of children's books have pictures which may give you a clue as to what or whom the passage is referring to.
24.Why was the author advised to read children's books
A. She liked children's literature.
B. She was slow to learn languages.
C. She couldn't remember any words.
D. She was weak in reading great works in German.
25.What can kids get from children's books according to the passage
A. Design skills.
B. Learning methods.
C. Words and writing structures.
D. Vocabulary and listening skills.
26.What caused the author to feel surprised while she was reading children's books
A. Getting familiar with the plot of the story.
B. Grasping the context from the pictures.
C. Understanding the words simply from the context.
D. Looking up the definitions of words from a dictionary.
27.What can be the best title of the passage
A. Reading Children's Books
B. My Good Reading Habits
C. The Ways of Learning Languages
D. The Method of Using a Dictionary

The term "social distancing" has been at the center of public conversation for a while. But it's not "social" distance we are trying to promote. It's physical separation. In fact, preserving social ties — even at a distance — is essential for both mental and physical health. The results of an analytic review published in 2017 indicate that a lack of social support is on a par with smoking cigarettes as a risk factor for health.
Given this fact, how might we best stay connected with others while maintaining physical distance Would we be better off e-mailing a friend Making a phone call Having a video chat In our study, Nick Epley and I tested whether the media through which people interact affects their sense of connection and how expectations of certain technologies impact the communication media they choose to use.
In our experiment, we asked participants to reconnect with someone that they hadn't interacted with recently, either by e-mail or over the phone.Participants first made predictions about what it would be like to get in touch if they connected in these two ways. They generally believed that they'd feel more connected when interacting over the phone than by e-mail.But they also predicted that talking on the phone could be more uncomfortable than sending an e-mail.Although these participants believed that talking encouraged stronger bonds, most of them said they'd rather send an e-mail than call the person up. It seemed that fears about awkwardness pushed individuals towards text-based methods for communicating.
In the next part of the experiment, we had participants use one randomly determined mode of communication to actually reconnect and then tracked them after they had done so.We found that people did form meaningfully stronger bonds when interacting over the phone than by e-mail.Importantly, though, there was no difference in the amount of discomfort when they were reconnecting over the phone.
The next time you think about how best to connect, consider calling or having a video chat.Feelings of social connection are preferably facilitated by voice rather than a keyboard.
28.How does the author support the view of the importance of maintaining social ties
A. By sharing public opinions.
B. By citing a published report.
C. By stating a deep-rooted tradition.
D. By presenting official documents.
29.What does the underlined word "preserving" in Paragraph 1 probably mean
A. Maintaining. B. Abandoning.

30.What can we know about the study results
A. They had no reference value.
B. They provided insights into future studies.
C. They confirmed researchers' expectations.
D. They contradicted participants' predictions partly.
31.What can be concluded from the text
A. For stronger bonds, talk instead of typing.
B. Keeping in touch is key to a lasting friendship.
C. Think twice before you consider contacting an old friend.
D. Text-based methods for communication cause discomfort.
D
We eat plants and juice them, and now it seems we can mine them too!
After a successful experiment on the island of Borneo, the botany professor Alan Baker and a group of researchers want to introduce phytomining (harvesting minerals from plants) as a better and partial substitute(代替物) for traditional mining.
Phytomining means collecting metals from live plants. However, this can only be done with a group of plants known as "hyperaccumulators (超富集植物)". There are around 700 identified types worldwide, and what makes these hyperaccumulators special is that they naturally attract and absorb minerals through their roots — metals poisonous to other plants — and then store huge and pure concentrations of these minerals in their bodies. The metals can then be extracted from the plants' sap(汁), oil, or sometimes even live tissue.
Baker and his colleagues see a lot of potential in phytomining. Not only can it help meet the growing global demand for metals, but it is a way of reducing some of that damage to the environment caused by traditional mining.
One of the biggest problems with traditional mining is that it pollutes the surrounding area. Phytomining can extract metal waste, plus planting the hyperaccumulators would regrow the deforested areas caused by mining operations. Aside from this, if phytomining is able to replace part of traditional mining, then there will be fewer instances of bad mining practices like abandoned mines, which pollute the nearby waters. Also, since phytomining provides metals that are already naturally pure, there is no need to use huge amounts of energy to purify them.
Phytomining has its drawbacks. Harvesting plants on a large scale is expensive today, compared to traditional mining. Besides, plants can be wiped out by diseases or unexpected weather conditions.
However, there are many reasons to consider phytomining. After all, we need to make sure that our planet can exist persistently and sustainable practices like phytomining give us the hope that our advancement doesn't mean sacrificing Mother Earth.
32.What makes hyperaccumulators different from other plants
A. The sap poisonous to other plants.
B. The oil extracted from live plant tissue.
C. The ability to take in and store minerals.
D. The concentrations of minerals in their bodies.
33.What is the advantage of phytomining
A. It can stop deforestation.
B. It can't be destroyed by diseases.
C. It may reduce the deserted mines.
D. It uses clean energy to purify metals.
34.What is the author's attitude toward phytomining
A. Pessimistic. B. Supportive.
C. Indifferent. D. Skeptical.
35.What can be the best title for the text
A. Metals From Plants

On a hot September afternoon, Peter and his friend Isabel were on their way to the library. When they passed by the Harriet Tubman National Historical Park, Isabel suggested cutting through it to get to the library. As they entered the park, the sight of the swings (秋千) and the merry-go-round brought back a flood of memories of their childhood spent there. But now everything looked so old, sad, and dirty. Litter lay on the ground next to an overflowing trash can. There were still young schoolchildren playing there but they had to avoid the trash that littered the playground. A little boy told them that the city took the other trash cans away and that the remaining one never got emptied often.
As they headed toward the library, the two high school students wrinkled(皱起) their forehead. In the library, they encountered Mrs. Evans, their kind-hearted fifth-grade teacher, retired yet still passionate. Mrs. Evans listened as Isabel and Peter eagerly explained what they'd seen. Finally, she recommended them to go to the City Hall to voice their concern.
The next day, Isabel and Peter went into the building of the City Hall but met an impatient officer. They were informed that the city couldn't help with their problem due to a tight budget. Discouraged, they left and turned to Mrs. Evans for help.
Under her guidance, they decided to ask Go Green, a non-profit organization whose goal is to protect the environment, for help. "This group is good at raising money for projects just like yours," said Mrs. Evans. She promised to arrange for them to present their ideas to Go Green. When they heard this, their face lit up.
Two main tasks remained ahead: finding ways to clean up the park and preparing a convincing presentation. As Isabel was good at researching and Peter always had a talent for speaking, they cooperated quite well. Isabel learned from a science magazine that a new type of trash can could squeeze the trash down without being emptied often, which saves time, money, and energy. On the basis of this, Peter practiced his presentation over and over again.
Paragraph 1:
A week later, Peter stood nervously at the back of the hall where Go Green was meeting.
Paragraph 2:
After the meeting, Isabel excitedly told Peter the good news.

结合语境可知,此处表示"足够做某事",应用be enough to do sth.结构。故填to feed。
Most of the wasted food,所以谓语动词要用单数形式。故填is buried。
62.however 考查however的用法。
share sth. with sb.

Dear David,
I'm extremely happy to hear that you'll come to China to learn Chinese paper cutting during this winter vacation.
I have some suggestions, which will be beneficial to you.First, you'd better see some Chinese paper-cutting exhibitions, where you can appreciate many excellent works. Besides, you are supposed to select a relevant training course. What's more, you can make new friends in the course, who will help you learn. I'm convinced that you will make rapid progress.
Looking forward to your visit!
Yours,
Li Hua
第二节
One possible version
Paragraph 1:
A week later, Peter stood nervously at the back of the hall where Go Green was meeting. Finally, it was time for him to make the presentation. Standing in front of several experts from Go Green, Peter was nervous in fear of screwing the presentation up. But unbelievably, when he began to speak, everything went so smoothly. His voice was clear and infectious, and his speech was logical and well-organized. Peter ended his presentation with a deep bow and went out to wait for Go Green's decision.
Paragraph 2:
After the meeting, Isabel excitedly told Peter the good news. Their ideas were approved and Go Green agreed to provide the money they would use to purchase the new type of trash can. Peter smiled. Not only did their efforts pay off, but also the Harriet Tubman National Historical Park would restore its cleanness and tidiness. Peter and Isabel decided to tell Mrs. Evans this good news first and then worked out the next step they needed to take.
