One possible version:
Jack walked around the horses. “Well,” said Jack, sighing, picking up the gun. “I guess I
better use this.” “No! We should at least try!” pleaded Ben, stroking the horses gently. Jack walked
around the horses again. He patted one of them on the neck. It made a sad, small groaning sound.
“Maybe you’re right.” He sure didn’t want to have to shoot these horses. Ben quickly got the hay
and spread it around in piles. The horses ate hungrily. With one more pat to each horse, Jack and
Ben climbed on the snowmobile and drove back down the mountain as quickly as they could to
2
report their news. Back at home the family had a hurried meeting. After discussing all kinds of
possible ways to put the horses out of their misery, they finally decided to shovel a tunnel.
The two brothers went from door to door asking everyone to come and help. They even put
notices up in the streets. Then they took the snowmobile back up the mountain with more hay and
water and some warm blankets. The horses seemed happy to see them. Ben and Jack started
shoveling with their fingers frozen and noses numb. Fortunately, soon a group of snowmobilers
arrived. For the next week, people came and shoveled every day, and a deep, narrow trench very
slowly worked its way down the mountain. Jack and Ben went every day to feed and water and
talk to the horses. When the big day came, Ben and Jack managed to lead the horses down the
long, narrow tunnel. Everyone was celebrating and hugging each other. Ben grinned from ear to
ear and gave the horses a big hug.

听力原文
Text 1
W: The price is reasonable, but if you don’t like this studio apartment, I can show you a new
one-bedroom unit up on the third floor.
M: All right. This one just doesn’t have enough room for me.
Text 2
W: We have a flight that will get you to Washington at 9:00 a.m. Is that OK
M: Do you have any flight earlier I have an appointment at 8:30. I have to be there at least an
hour ahead of time.
Text 3
W: How was your weekend Were there any tickets left for the play you wanted to see
M: Yes, but I found more choices online. We ended up getting some discount tickets to visit a
castle. We all enjoyed it far more than the art gallery we went to last time.
Text 4
W: Do you know Hary Houdini, an admirable magician Olive Fuller, a film-maker, is making a
movie about him.
M: Yes, he is from the USA. He is well-known at home and abroad.
Text 5
W: Can I help you, Sir
M: Yes, I’ve been a bit careless and left my driver’s license on a train.
W: Oh, dear. Well, let’s take some information and see what we can do.
Text 6
W: The manager from our Sydney factory just called to let me know that he would like the parts
he ordered for their exhibition in November to be delivered by the 25th of October. Could you
make sure to have them sent out by three o’clock today
M: Sure, but could I ask why he’s in such a hurry to receive them The exhibition is still two
weeks away, and the delivery only takes three days.
4
W: I know, but he wants to have plenty of time to test the materials in case there are any problems.
This way, he will have time to have them returned to be fixed.
Text 7
W: Hey, Taylor. How did the Human Resources meeting go I was on a visit to the Anaheim office.
It’s a pity that I didn’t make it.
M: Oh, hi Jane. You’re lucky you missed it. There was a disagreement between Mr. Stubbs and the
New York team over employee numbers.
W: Really What was the problem
M: Mr. Stubbs wants to cut back on the sales staff on the East Coast. Jameson and the New York
team were strongly in favor of increasing staff to increase sales.
Text 8
M: Hey, Charlotte. Are you going to the football game on Saturday
W: No, Tim. I’m not a football fan. Why, are you going
M: Of course! We’re playing Chicago. It should be a really good game. Both teams are undefeated
and this game will decide who gets to go to the finals.
W: Well, that sounds like it could be exciting. What time does the game start And how much are
the tickets
M: At 2 p.m., but it’s really good to get there at least an hour early. Everyone likes to hang out
before the game actually begins. And tickets are free with your student ID. You just have to pick
up at the stadium by the end of the day today.
W: I’m glad I ran into you. I think my first football game will be this weekend.
Text 9
W. You didn’t look good, Adam Did you have a bad day
M: I didn’t sleep well last night. I was fixing my computer until half past midnight. I went to bed
at one o’clock in the morning. Then my son woke me up at twenty to four because he felt sick.
W: Poor thing. Is he OK
W: Oh yes. I talked to him twenty minutes and then he went back to sleep. I didn’t. I lay awake in
bed until about six. Then my alarm six went off at a quarter past to seven. So I turned it off and
went to sleep again. Then, I overslept! I woke up again at ten minutes to eight! I washed and
dressed. I rushed out. And then I forgot my wallet.
W: Oh no!
M: Thankfully I had some pocket money in my pocket, so I could buy lunch. But I have to borrow
some money from a colleague to buy petrol. There wasn’t enough in the car to get home.
W: Time to go home. Well, you can relax this evening. Maybe watch a nice film on TV.
M: Well I’m afraid I can’t. My son will never let me have any spare time at home.
Text 10
M: OK. Today I’d like to talk something about first aid. Well, if you burn you hand, you should
put it in cool water, for at least twenty minutes. If you are using running water, that makes a
different. Maybe 10 minutes is enough. For a fever, well I know people often think they should
keep warm, but actually it is important to let your body get cool, so really the best thing is to
5
open the window and let the wind in, or even get in a bath to bring down the temperature. Now
the thing about backache is that the ideas have changed. It certainly used to be true in the old
days and lie down, but of course that’s not going to help your muscles. You’ll find it even more
difficult to move if you don’t use them all. So now we recommend that you keep moving, gently,
of course. We don’t want you to go and life heavy boxes or anything like that.
