Suppose you are going to a hotel with your family. You’d probably expect to find a room with a bed, a TV, and a bathroom. What might you find in an insect hotel?
Insect hotels don’t have beds or TVs, but they do offer ideal “homes” for insects. They can be as small as a backpack (背包) or as large as a car.
The idea of creating insect hotels began in Germany. The people there noticed that many insects are in danger of becoming extinct because humans are changing their environment. They decided to create an environment that would protect insects and help them do their work.
They found that ____28____. Some insects like wet environments, while others prefer dry areas. Wool, sticks, hay (干草), and leaves are some materials bugs find comfortable. Insect hotels may also include sections or “rooms”, that attract (吸引) different insects.
Insects are helpful in many ways. Some eat other insects that bite or sting us. Some carry pollen between flowers, which helps plants make seeds (种子).
Hotels for insects may be new, but beehives (蜂箱) are not. Humans have been creating homes for honeybees for more than 3,000 years. This hobby is called beekeeping. Beekeeping helps both bees and people. Bees make honey which we like to eat. They also carry pollen (花粉) between flowers.

Scientists have put human brain cells (细胞) into the brains of baby rats, where the cells grew and formed connections. The research is part of an effort to study human brain development and diseases influencing the brain.
Scientists put human brain cells into baby rats that were two to three days old. Pasca, a professor at the Stanford School of Medicine, said this is the first time these cells have been placed into their brains of baby rats. At that age, brain connections are still forming. The cells grew so that they took up a third of the rat’s brain. Neurons (神经元) from the cells formed working connections with the brain.
To test how the idea might be useful for studying human health, scientists put human brain cells into both sides of a rat’s brain. One side had cells created from a healthy person and the other side had cells of a person with Timothy syndrome (蒂莫西综合症). Five to six months later (信号), they saw the influence of the disease in the activity of neurons. The neurons from the person with Timothy syndrome were much smaller and did not grow too much to pick up signals from nearby neurons.
The researchers said they could do the same kinds of experiments (实验) using the cells of people with disorders (疾病) such as autism (自闭症). Such studies could help them learn new things about how these diseases influence the brain.
Dr Flora Vaccarino of Yale University said the study moves the field forward. “What they do here is very valuable (有价值的). It can help us better understand human brain development,” said Vaccarino, who was not in the study.

B. Discase treatment can be improved with the studies’ help.
C. Autism is a common discase influencing the brain.

It’s usually March in Africa. On the farm, local people are dancing and singing to celebrate their recent harvest (丰收). Their hard work has brought beautiful fruit and white rice!
This is the Second Farm in Xai Xai, Mozambique (莫桑比克) , where Yi Yun has been worked for six years. The 37-year-old from Liaoning followed his Chinese company here as a project manager. The company is growing rice on a farm that covers about 1667 hectares (公顷).
“When we first arrived in 2017, the farm was full of weeds (野草) as tall as a man,” said Yi. After clearing the weeds, the company taught local Africans farming skills. As Yi said, the local people are very willing to learn. “We have learned how to drive tractors (拖拉机) and harvesters (收割机) ,” said one local farmer. “The steps of growing rice taught by them help a lot.” In the past, plants couldn’t be grown in Mozambique. Life there was so hard that local people only grew corn and sweet potatoes to feed themselves. When there was drought (干旱) or floods (洪水), people had to deal with hunger. According to the website Guancha, 1.6 million people in Mozambique face serious food problems, and the rice yield (产量) only meets 28 percent of the country’s needs.
“We bring in techniques and seeds, “ said Yi. “They are happy that we can come because we not only help them solve their food problems but also provide jobs.” On Yi’s farm, 500 to 1000 local people got their jobs.
