Did you have cereal (麦片) for breakfast this morning If you did you’re not alone. Lots of people eat cereal for breakfast every day. In fact, cereal is popular all over the world. It all started with one man, Will Keith Kellogg.
Will was born on April 7, 1860, in Battle Creek, Michigan. His first job was as a stock boy at the Battle Creek Sanitarium. A sanitarium is a special kind of place that is a little like a hospital. A sanitarium is meant for people who are ill for long time or who are getting over a serious illness. Will had other jobs as he got older. But in 1879, he became a manager of the sanitarium. His brother, John, was the chief doctor there.
One big problem at the sanitarium was the patients’ diets. The patients needed healthy diets, but it was also important for the food to taste good. Will was trying to find a good food choice to take the place of the bread, but it wasn’t going very well. Then, by accident, Will found something even better. He left some wheat to cook too long. When it was rolled out, it formed large, thin flakes. He asked his brother to serve it to the patients, and they loved it! In fact, they liked it so much that they wanted breakfast flakes sent to them even after they left the sanitarium. So Will started a new business in 1884: selling packaged breakfast flakes. Before long, Kellogg’s breakfast cereal was popular in other countries, too. Today, there are many kinds of breakfast cereals. But it all started with one man and one idea.
Will did more than just create breakfast flakes. His company made a lot of money. But he always shared it with others generously. He used much of his money to help children. Human activity is changing the surface and temperature of our planet. But new research shows it is also changing the sound of oceans and seas. Scientists say these changes may have an effect on many sea animals—from very small fish to huge whales.
Sound travels very far underwater. For fish, sound is a better way to sense their environment than light. They use sounds to communicate with each other. Sounds also help some ocean animals find food and avoid their hunters. Sounds help fish and other sea animals survive.
However, increased noise from humans is making it harder for these animals to hear each other. The noise comes from shipping traffic, underwater oil and gas exploration and other noisy human activities.
Experts say that effects of noise on sea animals are not well understood. However, some studies suggest that noise may cause hearing loss. The stress from human noise might also affect the immune (免疫) system. Many sea animals are showing higher levels of stress because of noise. Also, the number of sea animals has gone down by about half since 1970. In some parts of the ocean, scientists now record fewer animals singing and calling than in the past.
When people think of threats (威胁) facing the ocean, we often think of climate change, plastics and overfishing. But noise pollution is another necessary thing we need to consider. When it comes to something humans can do for the ocean, we need to think about how to make it quieter. Sound pollution may be easier to deal with than other ocean threats. You can reduce or turn off sound at once.
43. Sound is important for ocean animals for many reasons, except _________.
A. they use it to communicate
B. they use it to find food
C. they use it to see their environment
D. they use it to avoid hunters
44. What can we infer from the passage
A. Swimming in the sea will cause noise pollution.
B. Noise does more harm to sea animals than humans realize.
C. There is little that humans can do to reduce noise pollution.
D. Plastic pollution is the biggest threat facing oceans and seas.
45. Which of the following best shows the structure of the passage
A. B. C. D.
46. According to the article, which of the following statements is not true
A. Noise has an effect on huge whales as well as small fish.
B. Ocean animals might not hear each other because of increased noise from humans.
C. Many sea animals don’t have much pressure as humans.
D. Plastics or climate change are much harder to solve than noise pollution.
D
Many people have attended lots of virtual (虚拟的) meetings these years. Some studies suggest that these types of meetings may not affect work efficiency (效率). However, a new study shows that the results are not like what people think.
In the study, 602 participants (参与者) were paired freely and asked to come up with creative uses for a product. They were also chosen to work together either in person or virtually. Among the groups, virtual pairs thought of much fewer creative ideas than the face-to-face groups.
“We ran this experiment based on feedback (反馈) from companies,” said lead researcher Melanie Brucks. “Unlike other forms of virtual communication, like phone calls or e-mail, video conferencing (会议) copies the in-person experience quite well, so I was surprised when we found meaningful differences between in -person and video conferencing for forming new ideas.”
When different objects were placed in both the virtual and physical rooms, the virtual pairs of participants spent more time looking directly at each other rather than focusing on the whole environment on the screen. Eyeing one’s whole environment and noticing the different objects made your brain more active. On platforms, the screen draws our attention, so we stared at the person on the screen. “Looking away might come across as rude,” said Brucks, “so we have to look at the screen. Just like while we are talking to someone in person, we wouldn’t walk to another room.”
So, although the video conferencing has some advantages, like facilitating communication and saving time and costs, it does limit (限制) people’s creativity indeed.
47 What can we learn about Brucks’ experiment
A. 602 people were divided into two groups.
B. Virtual groups came up with more creative ideas.
C. Some companies carried out the experiment.
D. It didn’t turn out as people think.
48. At first, lead researcher Melanie Brucks might think that _________.
A. video conferencing can’t compare with in-person meetings
B. participants should make eye contact in an online meeting
C. video conferencing works just as well as in-person meetings
D. in-person meetings are better for forming new ideas
49. What’s the main idea of Paragraph 4
A. Different objects have an influence on one’s creativity.
B. Why are virtual meetings bad for creative ideas
C. In-person meetings are better than virtual meetings.
D. Virtual meetings have different environments from in-person meetings.
50. Which of the following would be the best title for the passage
A. Virtual Meetings Affect Work Efficiency
B. In-person Meetings Increase Creative Thinking
C. Some Disadvantages of Virtual Meetings
D Meetings Online Limits Creativity

He also used his money to help in several other charities (慈善机构) . Will Kellogg died in 1951. But his most famous invention is as popular as ever.

47. What can we learn about Brucks’ experiment

49. What’s the main idea of Paragraph 4
A. Different objects have an influence on one’s creativity.

C. In-person meetings are better than virtual meetings.
D. Virtual meetings have different environments from in-person meetings.
50. Which of the following would be the best title for the passage

【1】Social media (社交媒体) is certainly an interesting place to learn others’ opinions. You can read everything from strange ideas to facts and everything in between. 【2】In fact, you might feel so strongly that you feel like you should reply to this person at once. You might do some research, find some facts of your own and reply to what they’ve written. You finish writing your reply, click (点击) “Post” and win the argument!

【4】And the thing is, when you get in these kinds of fights online, it slowly influences you.
