“Hi, Desha!”
Shocked, I found my brother James standing behind me.
“Don’t you have a basketball game to watch ” I complained.
“The game was almost over when I noticed you left. I thought you might like some company (陪伴).”
“Company is the last thing I want. Can’t I have a little peace and quiet ”
James studied me for a minute. “It’s hard having such a big family, isn’t it ”
“Eliza’s always prying into my personal life. Yesterday I found her looking through my diary. Now everyone is in the living room watching the game. All I wanted to do was to watch a movie, but when I went to my room. Sara was there listening to the radio. I just want to be alone for a change.”
James sighed and said. “I felt the same way when I was your age. But now. . .”
“Now you have your own room. After Daniel went off to college, you didn’t have to share anymore.”
James smiled. “It is great to have my own room, but sometimes I really miss Daniel. We used to talk about everything—sports, school, friends. Although sometimes it seemed crowded, it was comforting to have someone else there.”
“Yeah, ‘crowded’ is right.” I said.
“I know,” James said. “But there are some good things that come out of it—we share memories and jokes no one else understands, and we can support one another in face of difficulties.”
I sighed.
“Didn’t Sara stay up half the night with you last week helping you with your homework ” James asked.
I admitted (承认) unwillingly, “ Yeah, sometimes she is all right.”
“This place can be your ‘room’. Anytime you need peace and quiet, just come here.” James said, pointing at a rock.

Did you know that there might be Lego toys on a beach near you This year, 13-year-old boy Liutauras found a Lego octopus (章鱼) on a beach in Comwall, UK. The piece was one of millions that fell into the sea in 1997. At that time, a storm (风暴) hit the cargo ship Tokio Express. It pushed 62 shipping boxes into the water. One of them held about 5 million Lego pieces.
It’s known as the Great Lego Spill (乐高大泄露) of 1997. About 27 years after that, people are still finding Lego pieces across the beaches of Europe today. ★ . For example, there were only 514 green dragons in the box, and beachgoers (海滩游客) can get really excited if they find one.
Tracey Williams, a UK writer, was among many people who started finding Lego pieces after the spill. She started to write about the Lego finds in 2010.
“Searching for lost Lego from a cargo spill started as a bit of fun, a treasure hunt (寻宝) with my children. In the end, it opened my eyes to all the rest of the plastic in the ocean,” Williams told the media. In Williams’ book, Adrift: The Curious Tale of the Lego Lost at Sea, she looks at what humans do to the sea’s environment.
“Some oceanographers (海洋学家) believe it could have gone all the way around the world, “ Williams wrote in the book. In fact, people will not find most of these pieces because they are lying on the seabed.
This shows how long plastic stays in our oceans and environment. It never fully breaks down, and when sea animals eat it, they can get seriously hurt.
Lego tries to do better.
According to The New York Times, a spokesperson for the Lego Group said the company didn’t “ever want Lego . . . to end up in the sea” and is “serious about its role in helping to look after the planet”. This year, the toy maker said that it is stopping the use of oil (a) in Lego and using renewable and recycled (可循坏的) materials.

七、书面表达 (本题共1小题,满分20分)
Last week, our classmates had a discussion about teenagers’ and parents’ habits of watching TV and opinions about different kinds of TV shows. Here are the results.
Teenagers typically watch TV several times a week, preferring entertainment shows like reality TV and cartoons. Parents, on the other hand, watch daily, favoring news and educational programs. Both groups enjoy family-friendly sitcoms and sports, creating shared viewing opportunities. Teenagers are more attracted to fast-paced, visually engaging content, while parents value informative and thought-provoking shows. Additionally, teenagers often stream content online, while parents stick to traditional TV. Despite these differences, many families find that watching TV together strengthens bonds and encourages conversation.
