One of the most successful, influential and beloved women in American history, Eleanor Roosevelt once said that she had one regret:she wished she had been prettier.Who hasn't felt the same way We are all too aware of our physical imperfections. To overcome them,we spend billions upon billions every year. Why do we care so much about how we look Because it matters. Because beauty is powerful. Because even we learn to value people mostly for being kind and wise and funny,we are still moved by beauty.
Aristotle said,“Beauty is a greater recommendation than any letter of introduction”.It’s not fair, but it's true.We simply treat beautiful people better than we do others.Attach a photograph of a beautiful author to an essay, and people will think that it is more creative and more intelligently written than exactly the same essay accompanied by the photo of a homely author. As children, beautiful people are more likely to become favorites with parents and teachers.Later, they are more likely to get good jobs.Attractive people in need are more likely to receive help from strangers.
These days, women and men both rely on advanced technology to improve their beauty.Wrinkles can be stretched away with a face lift.Special injections can make lips look young and plump(丰满的).Besides being a sign of youth, good skin also means that the person is likely to be healthy.Still, it is possible to go too far.At the end.of the 19th century, some women even had their ribs(肋骨)removed so they'd have that perfect narrow waist.
Our sensitivity to physical beauty is not something we can control at will.We are born with it.Experiments showed that even small infants prefer to look at attractive faces. Before they have met a single supermodel, before they have watched a single TV show, before they have opened up a single fashion magazine, they are drawn to the same faces which adults have judged to be attractive.
There are more important things in life than beauty. But as Nancy Etcoff says, "We have to understand beauty or we will always be enslaved by it.”If you aim to be wise and kind and funny,it doesn't mean that you can't also try your best to look beautiful. There's no reason to feel guilty about being moved by beauty's power. It moves us all.

Stories play a vital role in the growth and development of children. The books they read and the characters they get to know can become like friends. It's also good for children to understand that books are a useful source of information and that good reading skills are important for success in their future lives.
Children who can read well are more likely to have higher confidence levels. This will benefit them in school as they'll feel able to participate fully in activities. Another part of building confidence is to know where you fit into the world.Stories can help with this process by showing children what people's lives are like where they live and in other parts of the world.
Stories are a great way to introduce new words and ideas into a child's language-starting with picture books for the very young, working up to more complex novels for teenagers.Fiction based on real life can also help children with their own life experience-it shows them how diverse the world is and that some people's lives are vastly different from theirs. And the process is done in a natural way. There's no actual teaching involved at all,but they learn from simply reading the story.
Reading helps children understand that there are other children who feel the same way and they are not alone. This helps children understand that feelings are normal and should be expressed.Watching their responses to the feelings of the characters in the stories will give you some idea of how a child feels about certain situations and emotions. For example, how the child responds to the character in the story feeling sad or scared will give you some idea of how the child thinks.
As you can see, children's stories are important for a number of reasons and form a vital part of the growing process.Being part of that process can bring children a sense of satisfaction as well as being great fun. So go and get your children some wonderful books to allow them to enjoy a relaxing bedtime story.

Ever called a movie theater to find out showtime Or called a customer service center for help Chances are you didn't speak to a human being. You probably gave commands to an Automated Speech Recognition (ASR) system. These types of systems are efficient money-saving tools that allow companies to address many customer concerns with minimum human intervention.
The technology for such a system has advanced greatly since its appearance in the 1950s.One significant recent achievement is the launching of virtual personal assistants (VPAs) on mobile phones. The most well-known of these is Apple's iPhone VPA,Siri. If you tell Siri that you want to schedule lunch with a friend,“she”can set the appointment on your phone in seconds. The VPA can also hold a basic “conversation” with a sense of humor. However,it can only be set off when the human user speaks certain key phrases or words.
While the potential for communication between a human and a machine may seem exciting, this possibility concerns some people. Some experts worry about people's attachment to these machines and fear that the art of successful human-to-human conversation will be undeveloped in younger generations. They worry that people won't be able to display the right emotion or tone in conversations because they haven't been practicing those skills.Others fear that machines will take over functions that were traditionally performed by humans, such as customer service.
Another concern often associated with the development of new technology is the invasion-of privacy. When people use certain speech recognition applications, they leave behind an audio track of their speech. When you ask a VPA for directions, your speech is often sent and saved to a remote server for processing. This digital information may lead to data mining, or the collection of large quantities of personal data.
For now, however, the continuing evolution of ASR software is thrilling to behold. Asking for and acquiring information from an automated source has never been easier.Leading companies in the speech recognition world will make human communication with machines as seamless as possible-in other words, just like communicating with another human.
32. What can we say about Apple's Siri
A. It's a helpful VPA.

Good gift giving is an art.The perfect present can lift a mood or improve a relationship. It can repair a wrongdoing,or simply remind,a loved one that you care. 36 We spoke to some experts to help us make a simple guide to gifting.
★Don't add a small gift to a big gift
37 Some flowers to go with a bottle of grand French champagne(香槟) Don’t.When we receive gifts, we tend to unconsciously average out their value,so a small gift attached to a big one will hurt the latter's influence.
★Gift experiences rather than things
A brand new iPhone becomes old fast. But a dream vacation or seeing your favorite artist in concert will give you memories that last forever.“Experiences often have more thought gone into them. 38 .We might remember the tablet that a friend or a loved one has bought us,but not as much as a two-week holiday to Florida—the memories and the emotional attachment are greater than to a physical object,”explained Farrelly.
★Think like the receiver
Let's put it very simply: buy things that your receiver would buy for themselves. That might seem obvious. 39 People tend to use gifts as jokes, encouragements to change one’s ways,or to signal something about themselves rather than providing happiness to the receiver.
The best way to get it right is to ask the frank question,“what would you like ”
★ 40 .
The last rule is a no-brainer: remember the gift of giving.A study finds that spending money on others promotes happiness. The good feelings you may experience from giving someone a gift they love may also last longer than spending money on ourselves.
A. Be generous enough
B. Is that always the way people do
C. So are there a set of rules to follow
D. And they create more vivid memories
E. But it happens far less than we'd like
F. Spend money on others
G. Do you attempt to add a tie to an expensive shirt

书面表达
Recently the“Red envelope”fever has swept through our nation.People use red envelopes to express their best wishes or even use it to repay others.Especially during the Spring Festival, people prefer to snatch red envelopes rather than watch the Spring Festival Gala.
From my point of view,it is reasonable to think sending red envelopes is a good way to strengthen the relationship when people's beloved ones, relatives or friends don't live in the same place.Besides, sending red envelops is really a Chinese tradition. To some extent, the "Red envelops"fever can help us keep our tradition. However,as every coin has two sides,we should have a correct attitude towards it.Paying too much attention to snatching red envelopes might cause people to ignore the true world.
People's relationship lies in the true love in the daily life instead of a certain activity.Faced with the “Red envelopes”fever,we should calm down.
