"Last night, there were 20 elephants on my farm, "said one man in Kenya. "We shouted and threw things to send them away, but they broke the fences and ate all my crops. What can I do "
Elephants are fascinating animals, but they cause serious problems for the farmers near Mount Kenya National Park. The animals often leave the park and go into the farms outside it. There they eat crops and break houses.
"The problem began when more people came to Mount Kenya and started new farms," a government official explains. "The land was used by elephants in the past. At some times of the year, elephants go from one part of the area to another. They remember their ways, and they walk through anything that's there-like a farm field or even a house."
Farmers and their children used to sleep in their fields every night. When elephants came, they built fires or played drums loudly to scare them away. But the next day, the farmers were too tired to do their work. They spent most of their time and energy trying to keep elephants away from their fields. Then, a local organization found a better solution for this problem. They built electric fences to keep the elephants out. The electricity for the fences comes from the sun. The farmers have more time for their work, and children can go back to school. However, these fences are expensive to build, and the farmers must repair them often.
Now the government of Kenya has a new idea. It wants the people around the park to start businesses for tourists. People around the world love elephants, and many tourists want to see elephants close up. The government hopes that this way, people and elephants will live together happily.

Roberta, Peter and Phyllis lived with their parents in a large house in a city. Their mother stayed at home and looked after them. Their father worked in a government office and came home only on weekends.
Roberta was the eldest. When this story began, they were a happy family. Their father was able to pay for a cook and a maid(女佣), so their mother did not have to do a lot of housework.
On Peter's tenth birthday, his father came home that weekend. As the family sat happily around the table eating their meal, there was a knock at the door. There came two men and they wanted to take the children's father away. The father said, "I must go away. I have a problem with the government." The children and their mother didn't know what was happening.
Every day for the next week, the children's mother left the house early in the morning and did not return until late in the evening. She looked ill and worried all the time.
Then about a week after their father went away, their mother said, "I'm sorry, children, but we must leave this house. We're going to live in a smaller house in the country." When finding the house was small and dirty, the children were not happy. Only some of their furniture from their old house was in the cottage(小屋). In the cottage there was a cellar(地下室).
It was time for supper and the children were hungry. There wasn't any fresh food, so they looked for canned(罐装的)food in the dark cellar by using candles. Finally they found tins of sardines(沙丁鱼)and a box of biscuits. After eating, the children's mother asked them to clean themselves. There wasn't any water in the cottage, so they went to the yard, where there was a pump. They had great fun washing under it. We use both words and body language to express our thoughts and opinions and to communicate with other people. We can learn about what a person is thinking by watching his or her body language. Words are important but the way a person stands or moves his or her hands can also give us information about his or her feelings. A person frowns(皱眉)when he is angry or in trouble. Parents pat their children's heads to show their love. Some players like to throw their arms forward, as if they're flying, after they score. You can see body language here and there. Body language does not use words. It is communication with the movement or position of your body. A hand gesture, a big smile, and a shaking leg these are all examples of body language. According to the research made by American scientist Edward T. Hall, in a conversation between two people, 65 percent of communication is body language. For example, a friend asks you to go on a picnic with him; you give him an "OK" gesture to say, "Yes, sounds good!" Sometimes, your words say one thing but your body language says another. You may touch your face unconsciously while telling a lie.
In different cultures, the same body language may mean different things. In the US, eye contact during a conversation shows you are interested in what the other person is saying. But in some Asian countries, it is rude to look straight at a person when you are talking to him or her. People in some countries use different body language to show the same meaning. In France, people kiss cheeks to say hello. The Japanese prefer to bow when greeting.
Perhaps the best example of a commonly understood body language is the smile. A smile can open doors and tear down walls. It can be used to express almost any feeling. We can use a smile to ask for help or to start a conversation. We can smile at ourselves in the mirror to make ourselves feel happier and stronger. And if we are feeling down or lonely, there is nothing better than to see the smiling face of a good friend.
