As a boy growing up in India, I had longed to travel abroad. I used to listen to the stories my father told me about his stay in Canada and tours of Europe in the 1970s, with great interest.
My big moment finally came in the summer of 1998 when I was able to accompany my parents to Europe, where my father was to attend a meeting. We planned to travel to Belgium, the Netherlands and West Germany.
Even today I have clear memories of going to Mumbai Airport at night all excited about finally going abroad. I had heard several great things about Lufthansa till then but now I finally got to experience them first hand, during the flight to Frankfurt. We flew business class and even today I can remember the excellent service by the Lufthansa crew (全体机组人员). The flight was really smooth and thoroughly enjoyable, even for someone like me, who is especially afraid of flying.
After spending almost two weeks in Europe, we took the Lufthansa airport express from Düsseldorf to Frankfurt Airport for our return. What a journey that was! All along the Rhine, it was simply an unforgettable experience. I had a sad feeling on the flight back to Mumbai as it marked the end of a wonderful vacation, but the Lufthansa crew members were able to change it into a most enjoyable experience yet again, with the quality of their service.
Being the first airline to take me abroad, Lufthansa will always hold a special place in my heart. Even today, I continue to enjoy flights on Lufthansa and simply cannot dream of choosing any other airline. Flying, in general, for me, has always been a terrible and painful experience. Flying on Lufthansa, however, is something I will always look forward to.

How many different emotions do you think you can communicate to people with your face Do you have the same facial expressions as the people from different cultures Read this passage to find out what scientists have just discovered about this topic.
New research suggests that there are only four basic facial expressions of emotion. However, how these expressions are interpreted might depend on where you are from. Research by scientists from the Institute of Neuroscience and Psychology at the University of Glasgow has challenged the traditional view of how the face expresses emotions. It was widely believed that six basic emotions (happiness, sadness, fear, anger, surprise and disgust) were expressed and recognized across different cultures. However, the University of Glasgow's work now suggests that the human face only has four basic expressions of emotion. This is because some pairs of emotions are impossible to distinguish. Fear and surprise, for example, both share wide open eyes. The facial expressions for anger and disgust also look the same.
So if our faces are only able to express four basic emotions, how do we communicate a much more complex(复杂的) kind of feeling The study found that the way expressions are interpreted is different in different cultures. However, while looking at how people from the East and West look at different parts of the face during facial expression recognition, scientists found that although there are some common features across cultures, the six basic facial expressions of emotion are not recognized universally.
What interests people about the cross-cultural aspect of the research This work leads to understanding which emotions we share and appreciating our differences.

A. Six basic emotions can be recognized.
B. Some of the six facial expressions are similar.
C. It is easy to tell from the basic facial expressions.
D. Six basic emotions greatly influence our character.

C. Happiness, surprise, sadness and fear.
D. Disgust, happiness, anger and sadness.
30.What can we learn according to Paragraph 3
A. Basic facial expressions are not universal.
B. Facial expressions can't show complex feelings.
C. The way to express emotions changes with time.
D. Western people have more kinds of facial expressions.
31.Which is the proper title for the passage
A. What Does Your Face Say
B. How Do We Communicate
C. What Are the Six Basic Emotions
D. Do We Have the Same Expressions

In our youth-obsessed culture, you would assume that your self-esteem peaks in your 20s — but that's not the case. Researchers from the University of Bern set out to determine when the average person's self-esteem is highest, and the good news is that your peak comes decades later.
Researchers found that self-esteem increases throughout one's lifetime and has a slight plateau(稳定期) during those awkward teen years. Our self-esteem levels then start rising again and don't peak until we go well into midlife. The highest point for the self-esteem level happens at age 60 when one retires and stays there until a slight decline in one's 70s and 80s.
The news that our self-esteem will continue to rise or stay steady during the majority of our lives is exciting. We often hear of increased stress in decades of midlife, but there are upsides too. "Midlife is, for many adults, a time of high stability in relationships and work. Moreover, most people further invest in their roles, which might promote their self-esteem," researcher Dr. Orth told the journalist. "For example, people take on managerial roles at work, maintain a satisfying relationship with their spouse or partner and help their children become responsible and independent."
As we age and our roles tend to change, it's natural for self-esteem to change.Dr. Orth said, "Old age frequently involves loss of social roles as a result of retirement, the empty nest and, possibly, widowhood(寡居). In addition, aging often leads to negative changes in other possible sources of self-esteem, such as socioeconomic status and health." However, it's important to remember that it's only a slight decrease. Dr. Orth believes that most people maintain a high self-esteem level even into their 90s and beyond.
32.Which of the following is closest in meaning to the underlined word "peak" in Paragraph 1
A. Minimum. B. Maximum.
C. Average. D. Height.
33.Who is more likely to have the highest self-esteem level
A. A newly retired person.
B. A teenage boy.
C. A person in his/her 80s.
D. A middle-aged person.
34.What does Dr. Orth think of the decrease in self-esteem for old people
A. It is destructive. B. It is unnatural.
C. It is important. D. It is acceptable.
35.Where is the passage most likely from
A. A travel brochure.
B. A science report.
C. A mystery novel.
D. A business magazine.

Once upon a time in my family, the last Saturday in November was the start of our annual big tamale(墨西哥粽子)-making party. We made tamales to share with friends and neighbors.
Preparation began with Daddy and the cleaning of the corn husks(外皮). First he boiled them and left them in the water overnight. No husk passed inspection without being soft enough for being folded. The next day, the rest of us got to work. My brothers and uncles were on hand for cleanup duty. And there was much to clean up as we women prepared the dough(生面团) made of corn. We also prepared the meat for the filling. The dough had to be spread evenly across the husk, and each tamale had to be folded carefully so it would not split open during the steaming. According to the long-standing tradition — at least in my West Texas family — no one was allowed to leave the kitchen during the steaming. This could ruin the process.
I thought the family tamale-making party would go on forever, but to continue a family tradition, you needed to have family. Mine had changed forever. My father, two of my brothers and my uncle died. Mom and I spent months in a state of sad loss. At that day friends asked, "Are we going to get tamales this year " Passing tamales out to friends was one of the great joys of the season after all. But we couldn't face it. Eventually, as years went by, people stopped asking.
One afternoon, my mother and I pushed an empty shopping cart through the supermarket. I rounded the corner into the next room and found her standing in front of a display: packages of dough, bags of corn husks, dried spices — all the ingredients for a perfect tamale. "It's time," Mom said. I knew she was right. We set aside a Saturday to spend in the kitchen, just the two of us, alone with our thoughts.

Paragraph 1:
But as we laid everything out I fell into the old routine. But we were for cleanup duty ourselves as we went along.
