Antarctica (南极洲) is known for being a large land of ice and snow, a place too cold for most life. However, the land is slowly starting to turn warm. According to The Guardian, the Antarctic has shown a new high temperature for the first time on record, raising fears of climate change in the world’s coldest place.
On Feb. 9, Brazilian researchers at Seymour Island reported a temperature of 20.75 ℃ on the icy land of Antarctica. It was almost a full degree higher than the past record of 19.8 ℃, taken on Signy Island in January 1982.
This record-breaking reading (数据) was taken at a watch station in the northern part of Antarctica. According to Brazilian scientist Carlos Schaefer, the temperature was recorded during a 20-year-long research project. The purpose of this project is to study the effect that climate change has on the permafrost (永冻土) within the area. Permafrost is the earth that stays icy for at least two years.
Although this is a first record high for Antarctica, Schaefer pointed out that “We can’t use this to predict climate changes in the future. It’s simply a sign that something different is happening in that area.”
But in fact, the last high temperature reading was around 19 ℃. These higher temperatures can cause ice in Antarctic area to melt (融化). This melted ice leads to a rise in sea levels that can put the coast areas in danger. It’s believed to be behind an alarming drop of more than 50 percent in the number of penguins, which are dependent on sea ice.
Like American writer Ernest Hemingway once said, “The Earth is a fine place and worth fighting for.” We should do everything we can to help save our planet. Otherwise, it may become too hot for us to live in.

Trees are useful to man in important ways: they provide him with wood and other products;they provide him shade;and they help to prevent droughts(旱灾)and floods.
Unfortunately,in many parts of the world, man has not realized that the third of these services is the most important. In his eagerness to make money from trees,(1)______________,only to find that without them he has lost the best friends he had.
This does not only mean that man will have fewer trees. The results are even more serious: for where there are trees, their roots break up soil allowing the rain to sink in and also bind(固定)the soil, thus preventing it from being washed away easily;but where there are no trees, the rain falls on hard ground and flows away, causing floods and carrying away the rich top-soil. When the top-soil is gone, nothing remains but worthless desert.
Two thousand years ago,a rich and powerful country cut down its trees to build warships, with which to gain itself and empire. It set up the empire, but without its trees,(2)_______________. When the empire fell to pieces, the home country found itself faced by floods and starvation(饥荒).
Even though a government realizes the importance of a plentiful supply of trees,it is difficult for it to persuade(说服)the villager to see this. The villager wants wood to cook his food, and he can earn money by making charcoal or selling wood to the townsman. He is usually too lazy or too careless to plant and look after trees. So unless the government has a good system of control,or can educate the people, the forests will slowly disappear.

“Why does the sky become grey?”“Why does the world lose its color?”These are the lyrics from the song Give you a bit of color, which is sung by Tan Weiwei,a pop singer from Sichuan Province. The song is popular not only because of its unique musical form but also its lyrics. It is about the smoggy days. So it's also called The Song of Haze.
Why do people worry about smoggy days?According to the Environ-mental Protection Agency(EPA),it can be dangerous to breathe in too much smog.
What is smog?
The term “smog” describes a mixture of emissions(排放物)—including emissions from industry pollutants, cars and other vehicles, open burning,and(1)incinerators-under specific climate conditions.
How can smog affect my health?
Because of the effects of ozone(臭氧)on your lungs, smog may lead to several different types of short-term health problems. Generally, these types of mild symptoms(征兆)only last for a few hours after you've been exposed to smog.
It's important to note that smog affects everyone differently, and some groups are especially at risk. Children, seniors, and people with asthma(哮喘)need to be especially careful on smoggy days.
How can I protect myself from smog?
In order to protect yourself and your family, you need to know the ozone levels in your area.
The AQI ranks air quality from 0 to 300. Levels above 150 are considered unhealthy for anyone, and levels above 200 are considered very unhealthy. These levels are red and purple colors.

Almost a seventh of China has been under heavy smog. The air pollution in 20 cities has reached the “danger level”. China is not alone, however. Many countries have the same situation. The air pollution is a problem from which we can't hide.
The United States
Since the beginning of the 19th century, America has had trouble with environmental problems, air pollution in particular. Almost 60 percent of Americans live in areas, where air pollution has reached unhealthy levels. It can make people sick.
The US created the Environmental Protection Agency in 1970 and passed the Clean Air Act. Now the air all over the country is much cleaner, especially compared to ten years ago.
London
Yellow grey smog was a frequent visitor to London in the 1950s and got the name “London fog”. The heaviest, which shocked the world, was in 1952. Because of cold weather and windless conditions, polluted air covered the city. People could see something around them only in a few meters and about 4,000 people died. In 1956, London passed the Clean Air Act. It largely reduced air pollution.
New Delhi
Because New Delhi is developing fast, its air quality is even worse than that of Chinese cities. New Delhi has done little to improve air quality in recent years. However, the city government made a few changes more than 10 years ago. They moved industry out of the city, built a subway and improved public transport.
